@OCCOM BILL,
Dammit.

On the other hand (devil's advocate) -- Brett has always done best when he has a chip on his shoulder. When he Has Something To Prove. I wondered after the trade whether this whole thing would fire him up to the point where he would do really well.

I think if he'd stayed with the Packers it would have been this weird jumble of emotions and he wouldn't necessarily have done as well as he's doing now.

Brett's got raw talent up the wazoo but the emotional part of things is especially important to him, too. Reggie White, Frankie (Bag-o-donuts) Winters, they (and his relationship with them) had as much to do with the Superbowl win as anything else.

@OCCOM BILL,
No one expects Rodgers to be at the top of that list after four Pro starts. I will admit that I, somehow, took for granted Brett's phsycial toughness. In my post above I groused about Ben Sheets being injury prone. Let's hope Rodgers can't be classified as such.

@Gargamel,
Which is not to say I don't feel your frustration! I hate it when the Packers lose. Especially to Tampa Gay.

Come on Soz... He'd have had the same chip on his shoulder... a system he's familiar with and better receivers. He’s still learning the NY system and performing like this.

Garg... it really has nothing to do with Rogers. Rogers is an unproven kid (looks pretty good) and the idea of choosing between an unproven kid and a legend at the top of his game is laughable. There should not have been a question.

Patiodog... I think he was just under 100 QB rating average after 3 games... which should be considered terrific. Favre's lifelong numbers are obviously phenomenal and last year was one of his best seasons ever. There was no reason to believe this year would be any different.

RP… the question was, or at least should have been, “who gives this team the best chance to win?” And the answer was already obvious before these 4 games were played.

Now we have Rogers wondering if he can stretch his 4 game starting streak to 5. Something tells me he’ll never climb to 250. We have replaced the Iron Man with a kid who looks pretty good. Rolling Eyes

@OCCOM BILL,
Hey, Bill, I wish you'd join in on the NFL a2k game. Not too late.
Eh, I'll let off nagging.

Interesting to me re both Rodgers and Cassell. I think they're both talented, but with certain limits.

Holy crap did you just see that catch by Driver...

Ballsy play call, too, and that long through into double coverage.

(Sorry, just flipped on the game for the last three plays...)

Pretty methodical dissection of the Colts yesterday. Mr. Rodgers top 5 in passer rating now...

@patiodog,
Oh really?

I've actually stayed completely out of this. I know a bit more about the Jets because the NYT is my daily paper.

Hey, if Rodgers becomes a real QB and the Packers do well, that's the best-case scenario I guess...

@sozobe,
Ew, neither of 'em have good records -- 3-3 for the Jets, 4-3 for the Packers. Packers are tied for best record within their conference though (Bears are also 4-3, though Bears are at #1 and Packers are at #2) while the Jets are currently behind the Bills and the Patriots.

@sozobe,
With a core of Rodgers/Jennings/Lee, they could be solid for a while.

And Ryan Grant, I s'pose, but RBs don't seem to last long any more.

Really looking forward to Packers v. Bears. I think Orton, while not the QB savior Chi-town has been waiting for, is much more talented and poised than anything the Bears have seen in awhile. I would say the two teams are evenly matched, but the Bears have the disadvantage of, well, being the Bears, and thereby having an uncanny knack for losing games in hilarious fashion.

@patiodog,
There's only one team in the NFC with only one loss. Probably have to win the NFC north to get a playoff berth, but it's not inconceivable that a team in the division could win a wildcard. GB, Chi, and Minn all get to play Detroit twice, after all...

Brett Favre leads last year’s 4 and 12 Jets to a 6 and 3 Start.
Aaron Rodgers leads last year’s 13-3 Packers to 4 and 5 Start.
Any questions? (Thanks Thompson Evil or Very Mad )

@ossobuco,
He stunk it up today.

Matter of fact, everybody in green and gold except the secondary did their fair share of stinking it up today. And almost won, anyway. (Turns out that bogus safety made a big difference...)

@patiodog,
I disagree. Our secondary was off the charts, Blackmon's TD punt return was awesome, Grant and Jackson did well with what little opportunity they were given and so did the receivers. Granted, our run defense was exposed (but Peterson really is special), 2 out of 3 isn't good enough for a kicker; but our biggest problem was a quarterback who holds the ball WAY too long, WAY too often. I like Rodgers, but the kid needs to take more chances or at least throw a few more away. I don't see how anyone can think he's an improvement over Brett Favre. I don’t believe for one moment that Minnesota team beats a Brett Favre lead Packers today. Thompson is a moron.

I’d also like to see a hell of a lot more play action… particularly roll-outs. The kid doesn’t have Brett’s stiff arm or uncanny ability to make something out of nothing, but I think his legs are a big enough threat to give Safeties fits.

@OCCOM BILL,
Pass protection was dismal, regardless of how long Rodgers held the ball, and then they started up with the usual rash of penalties in the second half. Not sure who's to blame for all the stupid penalties, but it's been a problem since week 1.

It was an incredible return (helped by some pathetic pursuit; that cut back to the left that got him past the last line of defense was a hell of a move, but how many purple jerseys were within 5 yards of him just looking confused) by Blackmon -- and a good thing, too, given his earlier decision to try to return from his own 7. (And what's with that challenge of the Peterson touchdown? If you win it, Minnesota probably takes at least half a minute off the clock, if you lose, you give up a time out. The only way it makes sense is if you think your D is up for a goal line stand, and given the way the game had gone down to that point, I'm pretty sure they weren't.)

I like the idea of more play action. I also think they should be looking to Lee underneath more and throwing a few screens to Grant to let him work in the open field. Thing is, if the O line can't protect, Grant and Lee are stuck picking up pass rushers and you're stuck playing vertical 1970s-style football, which hasn't been a consistent threat since -- well, since the 1970s.

Still, if Crosby makes that last field goal, GB wins.

He's not an improvement over Brett Favre THIS YEAR. For shame, considering Brett has only, what, fifteen years more experience as a starter?

Whereas Rodgers has perhaps fifteen MORE years as a starter ahead of him.

I think, for the most part, Rodgers is proving Thompson right. You will disagree.
