New voters: confirm your registration

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Your right to vote is among your greatest assets -one you should make sure hasn't been stolen by voter registration scams.
Several states, including Oregon and Nevada, are investigating charges that voter registration application forms were shredded by registration drive organizers.

The Federal Trade Commission also warns that telephone scam artists have been posing as volunteers making calls asking for personal information and even financial information to confirm that the voter is properly registered. In reality, the callers use that information to open new financial accounts and make charges in your name.

The U.S. Elections Assistance Commission recommends that if you have recently registered to vote, you should contact your local board of elections to confirm that your name is on the registration list.

If it isn't, ask a representative at the board of elections what options are open to you. You may be able to re-register if your state deadline has not already passed, or vote under a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots are given to voters whose names do not appear on registration lists, or who cannot provide identification. The ballot is not counted until the voter's registration has been verified - sometimes days after an election.

To report voter registration fraud or a violation of your voter rights, contact your state election officials.

If someone has made an unsolicited phone call to you asking for your personal or financial information for voter registration, report the incident to the FTC. Call (877) 382-4357.

Speaking of fraud, here's a piece from my local news.

INDIANA, Pa. -- A suspected scheme to register Republican voters surfaces at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Students thought they were signing a petition to legalize marijuana for medical use, but it turns out dozens of students at IUP were unknowingly registering to be Republicans.

The voter registration office said they've received about 20 complaints from students who claim they did not realize they were signing voter registration forms.

Those who didn't choose an affiliation were marked Republican by the petitioners.

Monday, university officials said they are investigating the scheme and are warning all students to be careful when signing any petitions or documents.

The registrations should have no real effect on the Nov. 2 election, since it is a general election and voters are not required to vote down party lines.

Students trying to legalize pot and the next thing you know they are registered Republicans. I love the irony here. With dirty tricks like this being played by Republicans it's no wonder stuff like this happens.

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Workers at a Republican campaign headquarters expressed their concerns Monday after becoming victims of vandalism.

Those working for the new headquarters, located in Ellwood City, said it should not matter whom you are voting for, property should not be damaged or stolen.

They had the letter "K" keyed on their cars and their Bush/Cheney signs stolen.

Campaign worker Bob Powell said, "We are in a heavily Democratic area and I think that the enthusiasm that we have has generated a little hype."

The workers are not pointing fingers at anyone and have not filed any complaints with police.

What do they expect to happen after tricking people? "Aw shucks, you got me" said the unsuspecting voter after learning he was tricked into registering Republican. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do but people get angry when they realize they've been tricked into something against their will.
