I hate to say it but those soldiers have larger issues then equipment. If they were tasked with a mission to get other soldiers supplies and equipment then they should have followed through with their mission.

I will always place the mission first
I will never leave a fallen comrade
I will never accept defeat
I will never quit

This is the warrior ethos and it seems that they violated at least 2 parts of the warrior ethos.
