Bush's budget cuts Amtrak, local cops, EPA
By STEVEN THOMMA
Knight Ridder Newspapers

Quote:
But the president's tax cuts are designed to do more than merely stir a sluggish economy. They would move the country toward a system where citizens keep more of their money, but also assume more responsibility for their own well-being. Among his proposals are tax credits to help the uninsured buy health insurance and Lifetime Savings Accounts, which would let people save tax-sheltered money for education, retirement or any other expense.

New Haven- I don't know if you read my earlier post, but I had made the same point as you about minorities and women, and then went on to debunk it myself:

Quote:
Interesting exercise. One of my points originally was, "believes in diversity by appointing women and minorities to top posts in government."

Then I realized that I WAS drawing a conclusion, about his motivation for the appointments. I changed it to read, "appointed women and minorities to top posts in govermnent." That is all that I can factually say. I don't have the foggiest notion why those people were appointed. It might be because :

*he felt they they WERE the best people for the job.

*he really believes in diversity.

*he wanted to curry favor amongst women and minorities, to in order to build a broader coalition for his ideas.

*Some other motivation of which I have no clue.

IMHO, first of all President Bush believes in God.
Then, he believes in his great country and her citizens, in their ability to cope with all the problems and to be winners in any conflicts.
Then, he believes in justice and common sense.

Hope I'm playing within the rules of the game when I point out that Bush evidently believes that a man...

1) who has never achieved anything by himself or without support and bailouts from family and friends;
2) who managed a long, unsanctioned leave from military service;
3) who had an undistinguished academic career (at best);
4) whose only previous experience of public service -- as Governor of Texas -- left that state with the considerable problems listed above;

...deserves to be president.
