Another history making moment...the coming together of SITTING BULL and GERONIMO descedents. The last two tribes to fight against the U.S. Calvery. Today their descendents stand together in the largest unification of tribes in our generation. ✊✊✊ At Standing Rock.

The Obama administration has just put a halt to the ongoing controversy regarding the Dakota Access pipeline. Today, the administration said that it would not authorize construction on a significant part of the pipeline until further environmental assessments can be done – which is a massive victory for the hundreds of thousands of Native Americans that were protesting against and fighting the project.

Earlier today, the Department of Justice, the Army and the Interior Department announced that the construction of the 1,170-mile pipeline would be paused near Lake Oahe, which is a big water source for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe – and one that the tribe believed would be ruined by the pipeline.

Going forward, these agencies will determine if permitting decisions for the pipeline must be reconsidered under the National Environmental Policy Act. The agencies released a joint statement:

“The Army will move expeditiously to make this determination, as everyone involved — including the pipeline company and its workers — deserves a clear and timely resolution. In the interim, we request that the pipeline company voluntarily pause all construction activity within 20 miles east or west of Lake Oahe.”
The Lake Oahe location was the tribe’s main concern, because a leak in the pipeline could have the potential of polluting or harming the lake and land around it. The halting of the construction is great news for the tribe because earlier today, a federal judge had denied Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s request to stop construction. Fortunately, the Obama administration’s decision didn’t come too much later.

Already, the public is rejoicing this decision by the Obama administration:

Likely the significant analysis will last until the protesters stand down. After that?

Arrest warrants for Amy Goodman and Jill Stein, as a result of their participation in the protests.

I guess this shows why they don't arrest them all.

@edgarblythe,
I fell for that photo. Turns out it's one from Woodstock in 1969.

It doesn't embarrass me that I made a mistake. What is annoying me about Standing Rock is nobody is speaking up for the protesters. Not many liberals or conservatives. I am the only one on a2k I know of even acknowledging it. Unless somebody else has a thread I haven't seen.

@edgarblythe,
It's all over the Standing Rock facebook page - asking people to report the photo as a fake. The community is pretty upset about it. There's enough real stuff without having to post fakes. There's also another pic from a Bonnaroo concert that the same guy posted that they're trying to have FB take down.

There is a state of emergency over an Alabama pipeline rupture that barely makes a ripple in the news.
