It means you can't fail at the task and still be in good shape. In other words, in this particular thing you absolutely must succeed.

You have "the luxury of failure" if you don't need to worry very much about failure, because it doesn't matter very much. You would have it if you were attempting to reach some goal that was not crucial, where during the attempt it became clear that the effort needed to succeed was not worth the eventual outcome.
