Our new house came with 65 watt floods in the recessed kitchen lights. We find it could be brighter - what is the highest, safest wattage we can use?

Generally, fixtures come with labels indicating the maximum wattage that can be used. Try detaching it and look for the label.

@LauraJC,
One option would be to switch to LED. They just much less energy so you could step up to an 100w equivalent without concern.
