As a child, i was taught that politics and religion were not topics for polite conversation, and that gossip was a scurrilous activity.

Yes gossip rules...a pitty he have some science only to debate religious fanatics...Edgar has been making an effort to present some scientific threads away from God debates, namely with Nasa stuff.

I suspect, but cannot prove it, that those topics that ask for personal help get posters to offer their concerned reply. The milk of human kindness then overflows the thread.

The homepage "categories" are sorted more or less by the most popular (all time, some topics such as computer help are not nearly as popular now) btw.

I have noticed that politics, religion, and relationships, are the most common topics on A2K. I also noticed that there are a vast number of all types of topics discussed here on A2K. No matter who you are. No matter your background. No matter your interests. You are very likely to find topics that you are interested in discussing. If you can't find topics that interest you, you can start discussions of topics that do interest you.
