As soon as I came in, I saw the thieves ___over the wall
1) had jumped 2) jump 3) jumped 4) were jumping
I believe that #3 is correct. Am I right?
Thanks.
@tanguatlay,
#3 is the only one that is grammatically imprecise.
@tanguatlay,
(1) The thieves are probably already on the far side, maybe running away
(2) They were in process of jumping when you saw 'em
(3) We'd say "
had jumped" per Mark above
(4) Same as (2)
@dalehileman,
Wouldn't it be more correct to say "As soon as I came in, I saw THAT the thieves had jumped over the wall"?

I think so too. Without "that", only "jump" is correct. Am I correct?
@TomTomBinks,
Quote:THAT the thieves had jumped over the wall
Yea Tom, technically, but here we'd oft omit
