Not really. Quite the opposite. Although, having grown up in a demographically and geographically similar city in the United States, I think I'd rather do it there than here.

@OmSigDAVID,
You've visited our zoo, David?

When was this? There have been a lot of changes (for the better, I think).

Returning to MC's initial question, I liked both cities for different reasons, but-- whereas I could see myself living in Melb.-- I don't think that I would ever live in Sydney.

Adrian, it's not that easy.... about 70% of English people want to leave the country, but about 1% find the resources and the time to do so.

I wouldn't live in either. Melbourne gives you 4 seasons in one day and Victorians actually think they smell different to everyone else. Sydney - very unfriendly. Give me Wollongong any time.

Why is it you Melbournites feel so insecure about Sydney? Get over it.

Because outside of Australia, Melbourne may as well not exist. If you're in Asia, and you tell someone you're from Australia, the first words generally out of their mouth are "Ahh, Sydney".

@OmSigDAVID,
Ah. Well some newer developments I like are placing people are in more enclosed spaces & the giving the animals more space to roam more freely. Like the giraffes.
Still a lot of room for improvement, though. Always. But then, I'm not really crazy about zoos. (But I am not about to get into debating the pros & cons on this thread. Wink )
But I agree with you, it's a pretty good zoo, as far as zoos go.

@Wilso,
Wilso, Wilso ...

Laughing

No argument: Sydney, or the harbour & surrounding areas, are just stunning.

This doesn't make me feel insecure, though. Smile

@msolga,
... I think this comment, by a new poster today is rather true, though..

Melburnians are in love with their city - it's like defending your wife or your husband...you know? All the "advantages" that Melbs has over Syd - when you get a Melbogan talkin' about it, it's all about love.

Dunno precisely why it's so, but it is. I feel rather the same. Funny, that.

@msolga,

I enjoyed it very much in May-June 1988.
I stayed at your Grand Hyatt, if I remember accurately.
It was spacious, sparkling clean and opulent.
I have only good thawts of Melbourne, Austrailia

I 've travelled a lot, mostly in America, and I made a rule
for myself to visit the zoos of other cities when I travel.
To begin with: I was impressed with your butterfly exhibition.
I went thru 2 sets of double doors leading thereinto,
where we mingled socially with the butterflies.
Since then, we have done that here too, but so far as I am aware, u did it first.

I was also impressed with your letting some of the peaceful animals
roam freely with the humans. (I remember petting an emu.)
We have some of that at the Bronx Zoo,
but I am certain that it is not intentional.
(A peacock literally flew the coop; he was enjoying the outdoor restaurant area.)

(My decision to pet the emu resulted from racial profiling.)

Agreed. The butterfly enclosure is indeed a wonderful experience!
I like the fact that some of the animals have much more freedom than the used to, too. Though some still don't have nearly enough space. (I remember a rather miserable gorilla, the last time I went. Sad )
You didn't manage to catch the otters at feeding time? Wonderful experience!

I didn't know there was a Bronx zoo, David! Surprised
There, I just learned something.
