Should it be "eat or drink" instead?

You may understand that there was nothing to eat and drink and not enough clothes, but Nichiren Daishonin needed many papers to write the Goshos. In ancient time, papers were rare and expensive and it was difficult to get them.

Should it be "eat or drink" instead? Thanks.
