Are"first" and "aged" necessary?

My mother first introduced me to Christianity when I was aged 12.

1. Is "first" necessary?
2. Is "aged 12" correct? Shouldn't it be replaced by "12", as "aged" appears redundant to me?

Thanks.

1. Not necessary.
2. "I was 12" is colloquial/casual/conversational. Also using figures in text. Better to say "I was aged twelve" or "I was twelve years old".
