When she was born, Nichiren Daishonin named his daughter as Tsukimaro.

Is 'as' needed? Thanks.

No. 'As' is a mistake.

@tanguatlay,
Depends, Tang, on exact meaning. For instance if "Tsukimaro" is not a gal's name but a concept or disease, then you need the "as"

Whoever would name his daughter as a disease?

You name something or someone like this:

I name this ship Conqueror.
I named my dog Spike.
We named our daughter Rosemary.

Not an 'as' in sight. However, I believe Americans sometimes use the verb 'to name' in the sense of 'to appoint to a post' for example 'President Obama named Merrick Garland as his nominee for the Supreme Court on Wednesday'. (NY Daily Post); 'Canadian Elizabeth Denham has been named as the UK's next Information Commissioner', (The Register)
