the States Rights Democratic Party (Dixiecrats) platform reads (to me) like a current day republican party platform.

I believe Thurmonds run on this platrform began the shift of the Democrats towards the party of social and equality (That it's now starting to return to), and the GOP to the party of the White, Straight, Male, Fundamentalist power structure.
