What communities would you start?

I suspect you'll still be able to put history questions/discussions into a general forum.

When I thought about this last night, I was wondering where threads from the conspiracy theorists are going to go. They don't self-id as conspiracy theorists and I couldn't imagine anyone interested in history as an area of study would want to moderate a forum that included those threads.

I suspect it'll shake itself out. Perhaps one of the things forum leaders will be able to do is view first posts in their forums before they are added? that could be helpful. Maybe block conspiracy theorists?

@Robert Gentel,
It sounds like it will be a lot like Reddit.

Yes?

That would significantly lower the entertainment value of the forum.

@George,
I'd be ok with that.

@boomerang,
The vision I have for it predates it and there are significant differences in their approach but it is in many ways similar.

@ehBeth,
Yeah, I'm sure there will be plenty of general-purpose communities. I've even seen quite a few conspiracy-focused communities on the internet. I'm sure we'll eventually have those too.

I would like to see a community about gender issues, maybe including sexual preference issues. I've hardly learned the names that people are taking as self-descriptive, no expert, but I expect that some of us have friends and family members who could be interested in a community(s) on these. We already do get a fair number of 'what is my sexuality' questions.

@ossobuco,
On a slightly related note I think it would be interesting to see someone start communities for men and women respectively. I wonder what a men only community or women only community would be like.

@Robert Gentel,
What, you mean like my London club?

Leather armchairs, brandy, that sort of thing?

Marvellous!

The new site needs a cellar, where we keep all the corpses.

@edgarblythe,
or put the cafe..

(I just finished a book where some folks in France who clandestinely sent anti-facist newspapers to Italy in 1939 met in cafes. One of those was in the cellar of a building, downstairs from the street)

@Robert Gentel,
Good! I like Reddit. Some of it, anyway.

The narrow focus on some of the subreddits makes getting an definitive answer much easier.

My problem with it is that it is so huge that there is a lot of repetition and that you never really get to know anyone very well.

I look forward to the changes!

Just thought of a couple I want to start: riddles and a community for photography.

I would peak on the other side to see what was going on.

@Linkat,
I envisioned them being public to read for the same reason.

@Robert Gentel,
Yes to both; I'm not a riddle person (maybe one day in the future, know a lot of people like them) but some of my favorite threads on a2k have been good photo threads over the years; also the technicalities of photography matter to many and we don't do much talking about that here.. nor all that much have we done re specific photographers of past or present. Then there's cinematography..

I would like to see a category for animals. This would include pets, but would go beyond domestic animals. For domestic animals, we could include care, health, training, etc., as well as the threads we already have. For wild animals, we could cover habitat issues, extinction issues, and just general news and info.
