You know that Erdoğan has his back against the wall when he is trying to save himself by arguing that his military is incompetent.

@hawkeye10,
So you think Turkey, one of the most influential and stable countries in the region, should stop looking towards the West and instead turn to Mecca.

You really know how to **** things up.

They already are. They flirted with being European but then went the other way. Reality must be respected. FOr me Turkey supporting Daesh is the final straw. Time for them to go.

@farmerman,
The guy was flying just on the Syrian side of the border on his way home from a bombing mission. When are you going to stop spouting bullshit?

@gungasnake,
I fully expect that the Assad/Russia/Iran team will change battle plans now, will prioritize sealing the Syrian/Turkey border to Daesh. Last I heard this border had been about 300 miles but was down to about 50. I highly doubt that the kurds will allow Daesh resupply, so doing this will remove Erdoğan from the board. His idiotic downing of a Russian plane is justification for taking out Erdoğan before attention is turned to the final solution to Daesh.

@hawkeye10,
I will also add that Putin and the Iranians should put a giant base right up near the border once it is cleared. You know that once Daesh gets deprived of Turkish support they will make a massive push to regain the supply route. A lot of force will be required to keep the border sealed. We also cant be sure that Erdoğan is not dumb enough to try to break the embargo himself.

At the same time, the Russian leader harshly criticized the U.S. for the failure to prevent its NATO ally Turkey from shooting down the Russian military jet Tuesday at the border with Syria.

Turkey said it shot down the Russian Su-24 bomber after it flew into its airspace for 17 seconds despite repeated warnings.

Putin dismissed the Turkish claim and held the U.S. responsible for failing to rein in its ally, saying that Russia had informed the U.S. about its military flights in advance in line with a recent agreement between Moscow and Washington aimed at preventing clashes between their aircraft.

As the leader of the anti-IS coalition, the U.S. should have made sure that the Russian warplanes aren’t targeted by its members, Putin said.

“We proceed from the assumption that it will never happen again,” he said. “Otherwise we don’t need any such cooperation with any country.”

He denounced the Turkish action, saying it “thoughtlessly and rudely” destroyed friendly ties between the two countries.

@hawkeye10,
Then went the other way? More like were given the run around by France and Germany over EU membership.

Do you just imagine something and then assume it's true? That's called making **** up.

It is kind of a chicken and egg situation there, but yes.

@hawkeye10,
It is that clear cut, in the same way the first chicken emerged from an egg laid by something that was not quite a chicken, Turkey's attempts at rapprochement with the West since Ataturk, have been rebuffed by the West, not the other way round.

Maybe it's time to take a different approach.

How does Putin blow up NATO? He doesn't. He simply watches NATO blow up itself. He forces NATO to work together, such as in defending Turkey under Article 5 or fighting ISIS.

In the end, NATO won't work together because of weak U.S. leadership and the reality that most countries have no real military resources to bring to the game. NATO is like a baseball team where only a couple of guys can play and the rest can't do much more than watch from the dugout.

We will watch to see how this plays out. Putin is a master tactician, and he assumes that Obama is weak and the West is weaker. He is betting that he will win because the other side doesn't want to fight. And he is right

THat is what he thinks all right. Considering that the American political class are in meltdown mode and the europeans were so stupid to invite the hordes to invade and then concentrated on managing the invasion rather than doing a rethink on the whole program indicates that he has a point.

This is why I'm so worried about Latvia/Lithuania/Estonia.

Putin isn't right. As soon as any Russian invasion of NATO happens, we'll be only hours away from a full scale nuclear war.

@oralloy,
Putin simply isn't stupid enough to want to own those baltic countries. They could offer to pay him to manage their affairs and he wouldn't be interested.

@oralloy,
Previous Soviet leaders seemed to "get it" that there is no winnable war with nuclear armed opponents. Whose land will be less devestated i hardly a victory.
When a Russian states that "hes not interested in countries A or B"--Hes really interested in both A and B. History has taught us about the
perfidy of these people's leaders.
My entire family had either escaped the pogroms of the Tsars or the killing of the teachers and writers by the Soviets.
