To make this really interesting, we could pick a place and see what each of the guides and our other resources says about it. (Much more fun than politics.)

how would we do it without buying guides?

Well, maybe that'll be a test of what content the guides' internet sites contain.

I LOVE the DK "Eyewitness" Guides. More photos & maps than any others. Also, pictures of food, money, etc. Just reading through one of these guidebooks makes me feel as though I've been there. For the very visual...

I have mixed feelings about photos. I love them, could look at travel photos all day long. On the other hand, I remember my surprise when I walked down a very narrow street and turned the corner to see the early morning unpopulated piazza Navona, which I'd never heard of before.
I couldn't believe my eyes.

So, part of me likes the fat guidebooks with little in the way of photos, and part of me devours the glossyh rather heavy ones with photos.
