Trump talked politics with Bill Clinton weeks before launching his 2016 Presidential Run
by Robert Costa and Anne Gearan

The mogul’s allies say the former president encouraged his efforts to play a larger role in GOP politics.

Former president Bill Clinton had a private telephone conversation in late spring with Donald Trump at the same time that the billionaire investor and reality-television star was nearing a decision to run for the White House, according to associates of both men.

Four Trump allies and one Clinton associate familiar with the exchange said that Clinton encouraged Trump’s efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party and offered his own views of the political landscape.

Clinton’s personal office in New York confirmed that the call occurred in late May, but an aide to Clinton said the 2016 race was never specifically discussed and that it was only a casual chat.

The talk with Clinton — the spouse of the Democratic presidential front-runner and one of his party’s preeminent political strategists — came just weeks before Trump jumped into the GOP race and surged to the front of the crowded Republican field.

The revelation of the call comes as many Republicans have begun criticizing Trump for his ties to Democrats, including past financial donations to the Clintons and their charitable foundation.

Trump took the call from his office in Trump Tower in New York, according to the four allies, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly. The call came as Trump was making a final decision about whether to run, and he was candid about his political ambitions and his potential interest in seeking the White House during the talk, these allies said.

The 42nd president listened intently and then analyzed Trump’s prospects and his desire to rouse the GOP base, the Trump allies said.

The tone of the call was informal, and Clinton never urged Trump to run, the four people said. Rather, they said, Clinton sounded curious about Trump’s moves toward a presidential bid and told Trump that he was striking a chord with frustrated conservatives and was a rising force on the right.

One person with knowledge of Clinton’s end of the call said the former president was upbeat and encouraging during the conversation, which occurred as Trump was speaking out about GOP politics and his prescriptions for the nation.

@korkamann,
This actually makes sense to me....they both share the NYC connection and they both I think share a dim view of the modern Washington and the current process....that they would unite over shaking things up could have happened. If it did I will think much better of William Jefferson Clinton.

@hawkeye10,
To those who say that "of course Bill is ******* with the R's to help his wife" I say that the R's are much better off than they would have been without Trump because now they have cred as being agents in the revolt against Washington that they would not have had if the elite had been able to completely program things, and I never liked Clinton but I am fairly curtain that he cares too much about America and too much about the process and too much about the rep of Washington to do that...even to help his wife. The man has a lot of failings, but not caring and being shallow are not on the list.

What I find odd is the close relationship between Trump and the Clintons, especially during the 2008 presidential candidate Trump campaigned on the Birther issue which claimed Barack was born in Kenya. But then again, that should not have an impact on friendship with trump, after all,during the time Hillary was running against Barack.

It seems Trump contributed to Hillary's senate run, and her Foundation as well as having the Clintons attend his third marriage. What makes this difficult to follow is Trump has recently trashed Hillary claiming she was the worse SoS ever! But he did not continue doing so as he did with John McCain and the vile characterization of illegal immigrants.

The call just might be a coincidence. If the Clintons and Trump are indeed close friends, then there is nothing wrong with his calling Bill who has a wide assortment of friends, and the former president of the US is nice to have as a friend to a business man such as Trump.

Perhaps I am reading too much into this call that was published by the Washington Post....the media is always looking for a story even when there's nothing there to report.
