thanks Thok, I don't want to sound (well, I lost a word, but you'll know it I guess) "", but I was really scared all game because it was our worst game on Olympics - except last 15 minutes Wink Ivano Balic, world's best player, played absolutely terrible. Generally, it was not very nice game, but gold is what it counts - and, after all, Germany has 14, and that's our first Wink

as for Medal count, I think that this "by population" thing is also not that accurate. I think some kind of combination would be best, and in the light of that Australia is probably best sporting nation in the world. I mean, I like Bahamas, but when you have 200,000 people it's not that tough to be on top of list even with just one or two medals Wink

I don't know if he was it, but the outside left made the most important goals for Croatia.

hey Thok, and especially Walter (no offense Thok, but Walter knows everything in the world Very Happy) what's wrong with German stadiums? Smile I was just watching some goals from 2nd division matches (soccer) on DSF, and first it was reportage from Saarbrucken, and then from Dresden, and on both stadiums there were clearly visible lines of american football? I mean, it's kinda strange Smile

Not at all - both stadiums are used for the American football teams as well (Saarland Hurricanes and Dresden Monarchs, both 1rst Bundesliga, I think).

back to Olympics - I am generally very happy with Croatian performance, after all 5 medals (1 gold, 2 silvers, 2 bronzes) is record in our short independent history. I am a bit disappointed with some athletes though, but I guess you get something on one end, and you lose it on another Smile
I was sure Blanka Vlasic will take medal in high jump (15 competitions this year, including strongest track&field meetings like Zurich, Paris, Rome...and never under 3rd place. On Olympics - 11th Sad ). Also, taekwondo fighter Natasa Vezmar, second on World Championship, was almost certain medal after draw - bye in 1st round, and anonymous fighter from Jordan in quarter finals. She lost from "now not so anonymous fighter".
Waterpolo team was huge disappointment also.

But, I never dreamed that Duje Draganja will get silver medal in 50m freestyle, and bronze medal for tennis double was also kinda surprise, although we are good in tennis.

I was also again pissed off with some participants. I mean, IOC has to do something with norms for Olympics. It's okay to allow every country to have one or two participants, but that can be done without norms. So, it's okay that guy or girl from Kiribati, Sao Tome & Principe, or East Timor is there, no matter what are his or her results, but I really don't think there's room for Croats that come a minute after all participants in canoeing. We are small country, but not when it comes to sports. And, if we have swimming medal, and lots of semifinals, and we are still disappointed because we were counting on at least three more finals, then there's no room for Croat that ends 47th out of 49....

I say - best 30 in individual events and best 8 or 12 in team sports that year go to Olympics, no matter from what country + every country has right for one male and one female participant (on Olympics, not in every event) no matter what are their results.

Still, it's weird Smile I mean, it's Germany, not....well, Croatia (I don't want to offend anyone else Very Happy). Germans certainly do have money for two stadiums?

oh great, on last event of Olympics some retarded idiot attacked leader in men marathon. I guess you can't have great sport show nowadays without at least one terrible incident. Now this leader is third.

The protester, wearing a kilt and a green beret and a white placard with the words "The Grand Prix priest. Israel fulfillment of prophecy says the bible, the second coming is near," on it, was immediately arrested and taken to a police station.

Police have said it was Cornelius "Neil" Horan, a former priest who disrupted last year's British Grand Prix. He was then jailed for two months following his race track protest at Silverstone.

A police source said: "The man says he is Irish, he is also drunk. He had been to a taverna earlier. Police are going through his stuff."

After the incident, de Lima said: "I trained a lot for this and I'm very happy to win this bronze medal.
If the spectator didn't jump in front of me in the middle of the race, who knows what would have happened? Maybe I would have won. It disturbed me a lot."

I think, it was a good idea, the winner ceremony holding at the closing ceremony.

That even was the Olympic Games 2004 in Athen.
To exclude the 20 doping cases:

Very exicted and in general great, which cost around gigantic 10 billions $.

Found some interesting history:

In the ancient Olympics athletes competed in the nude

The word "gymnasium" comes from the Greek word gymnos, which means naked. In ancient times athletes practised in the nude to the accompaniment of music. They also performed naked at the Olympic Games. Women were not allowed to participate or even to attend as spectators.

The first Olympic games were held in 776BC - and then every 4 years until 339BC. The first Olympic race was won by Corubus, a chef. For many years the Olympics consisted of only one race, a sprint of 192 metres (210 yards, the length of the stadium) called the "stadion." A second race of 400 metres was added 50 years later. The pentathlon, wrestling, boxing, single-horse and four-horse chariot races were included later still. There also was a special event in which runners competed in hoplite armor, helmet, shield, and greaves that weighed 20-25 kg (50-60 lbs). There were no team events, relay races or the long distance race of Marathon - these events were introduced in the modern Olympics.

Go for silver
No medals were awarded in the ancient Olympics. A winner received an olive wreath to wear on his head. Second and third placings received nothing. When the Olympics were revived in 1896 in Athens, Greece, winners received silver medals instead of gold medals. Eight years later, at the 1904 Games in St. Louis, gold replaced silver for first place. Today's gold medals actually are sterling silver covered with a thin coat of gold.

Olympic medals since 1928 have featured the same design on the front: a Greek goddess, the Olympic Rings, the coliseum of ancient Athens, a Greek vase known as an amphora, a horse-drawn chariot, and the year, number of the Olympiad, and host city.

Games for all
At the first modern Olympic Games there were 311 male but no female competitors. Women were allowed to take part in the next Olympics in Paris. In the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games there were 3543 female competitors.

The oldest Olympic athlete at the Sydney Games was a 62-year-old archer representing Vanuatu. But he has some years to go to be the oldest ever Olympian. That title is held by Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn who won his sixth Olympic medal at the 1920 Antwerp Games at the age of 72 years and 280 days old. The youngest ever Olympian is Greek gymnast Dimitrios Loundras, who competed in the 1896 Athens Olympics. He was 10 years old.

The first ever perfect score of 10 in Olympic gymnastics was achieved at the 1976 Montreal Olympics by Romanian Nadia Comaneci. She won 3 gold medals.

The record for the most Olympic medals ever won is held by Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina. Competing in three Olympics, between 1956 and 1964, she won 18 medals: 9 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze. Thus she also tops the list of gold medals winners, beating Olympic stars such as US swimmer Mark Spitz and Finnish long distance runner Paavo Nurmi.

The Olympic Games is the largest single broadcast event in the world, broadcasted in 220 countries to more than 3.5 bilion people.

It's not fair:

15 GRE Greece 6 6 4 16 =17
16 NOR Norway 5 0 1 6 =32
17 NED Netherlands 4 9 9 22 =13

22 medals in total. Norway has only 6 medals. But just because they have 5 golden medals, and we have 4 golden medals, they are 16th and we are 17th. It's not fair. Crying or Very sad In Sydney we were 7th you know. 12 golden medals. <sigh>
