Democrats give Ron Reagan prime time speaking slot

Kerry aide: Late president's son to address stem cell research

(CNN) -- Ron Reagan will speak in prime time at the Democratic National Convention on the importance of stem cell research, a senior adviser to presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry told CNN on Sunday.

The Kerry adviser, who did not want to be identified, said the appearance of the younger son of the late former President Ronald Reagan came about after "overtures were made by both sides -- friends of both."

The adviser did not say on which night Reagan, 46, will speak. The four-day convention kicks off July 26 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Ron Reagan, a self-described liberal whose political views were often at odds with his conservative Republican father, has said publicly that he does not support President Bush's re-election

Will his appearance help sway INDEPENDENT voters given his fathers recent death?

Will his and his mothers stance on stem cell research work against Bush's more right wing stance and sway moderates?

I believe the article lays out the fact that he is "liberal" but that's not what I was addressing. Have anything other then the "duh" factor to offer the discussion?

Ron Regan may well sway some independent voters. First of all, judging by his recent appearance on "uncommon knowledge", he will bring some much needed charm and eloquence to a platform of mostly boring people. Ron Reagan appears to have his father's gift for relating to his audience, and that's a weapon in pretty short supply on both sides of the 2004 campaign. So that's good.

Another hope I have is that the Democrats will make a play for the libertarian independents and Republicans. If they do that and they're smart, they will use Ron Reagan to drive home the point that George Bush is not the heir of Ronald Reagan which he claims to be. Case in point: If you read Ronald Reagan's inaugural address of 1981, it is hard to ignore that much of that speech sounds much more anti-Bush than anti-Kerry today. Here are a few excerpts

On the economy, Ronald Reagan wrote:

For decades, we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children's future for the temporary convenience of the present. To continue this long trend is to guarantee tremendous social, cultural, political, and economic upheavals.

You and I, as individuals, can, by borrowing, live beyond our means, but for only a limited period of time. Why, then, should we think that collectively, as a nation, we are not bound by that same limitation?

On the treatment of allies, Ronald Reagan wrote:
To those neighbors and allies who share our freedom, we will strengthen our historic ties and assure them of our support and firm commitment. We will match loyalty with loyalty. We will strive for mutually beneficial relations. We will not use our friendship to impose on their sovereignty, for our own sovereignty is not for sale.

On dealing with terrorists, Ronald Reagan wrote:
Above all, we must realize that no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon our adversaries in today's world do not have. It is a weapon that we as Americans do have. Let that be understood by those who practice terrorism and prey upon their neighbors.

These are soundbites which the Kerry campaign could copy & paste directly into their own campaign speeches, and Ron Reagan is the right person to do it.

When Ron Reagan, Jr was recently interviewed on Larry King Live he was asked if and/or how the Republican Party has changed and Ron Jr's response was "It's a meaner party now, co-opted by the Religious right". Right on Ron, Jr. Cool

I think that both Ron Jr. and Nancy have no use for President Bush and his corrupt administration. The Reagan family has the ability to influence many voters who are 'sitting on the fence' and I think they will do just that. Nancy is a strong and fiesty woman and when she and Ron Jr. get the word out that the Bush administration considers stem cell research equal to the 'crime' of abortion many Americans will hop the fence on the side of John Kerry.

McGentrix was asking about Ron Reagan's sexuality simply out of curiosity, of course, because I'm sure he understands that sexuality has no relevance to the discussion here.

Right McG ?

Well there's a reason that Republican Moderates are speaking. You have to wonder where are the REAL Republican leaders? Lott? Delay? Falwell? O'Reilly? Where are all those wonderful purveyors of Republican ideals when the RNC moment arrives? Makes you take another look at the so called "character" of the RNC doesn't it?

As far as Miller, well that man is a disgrace. It's one thing to disagree with your party and another to be so blantanly biased to the opposing party. Thank God he's retiring, I say good-bye to bad rubbish and the GOP's can have him!

Ron Reagan just destroys the GOP, and they cannot do a thing about it (except advance innuendo).

They can't criticize the son of Saint Ronnie without looking like the rectums everyone knows they really are.

I'd say the Ron Reagan trumps Zell Miller by a few light years.

Now Ron has made it clear that he only intends to address Stem Cell research.

However we all know how Americans percieve much of the news, from the headlines. So the headlines alone will help. If anything it will prevent the Bush's from trying to adhere their lips to the Reagan legacy.
