More on the saga of Canuck the crow. His nest with babies in it became quiet, and the man befriended by Canuck finally determined they had died, due to an unknown cause. Prior to that, Canuck and his mate had taken very good care. One day, the man saw a bird approach the cage and lift one of the babies, but dropped it all the way to the ground. Canuck came down to guard the baby, which appeared dead, but then slight movement was detected. In the end, Canuck moved back to trust the man to help the baby. After some intensive care with a vet, the baby improved and was taken to be raised by whatever place takes in such animals. The baby has grown up enough to be flying.

@Roberta,
After the baby was a healthy juvenile, he reunited it and Canuck, but Canuck no longer had that parental instinct at play and paid it no attention.

Canuck and I

SURPRISE!!! :-)

The biggest thing to ever happen to Canuck, happened this morning. This morning, Canuck was officially banded by the Canadian Government and is now a Federally Protected Crow. He has been given a new band to go along with the orange band he's become so known by. This is something that has been in the works for quite some time and I'm glad the day is finally here. The idea was first proposed by myself during the filming of the documentary back in 2016 while ornithologist Rob Butler and I were at the Rookery together. It's taken a long time to get this approved, and I couldn't be happier. I have more details and photos of the exciting event coming up. I would like to thank Derek Matthews and his team from the Vancouver Avian Research Centre for coming out this morning to make this a reality. Canuck even had his orange band checked out by the professionals and it was determined it is 100% safe for him to continue wearing. This is a big day for Canuck and I'm happy I can share it with all of you. Time to celebrate!

Canuck and I

Usually while hanging out with Canuck, I end up managing the Facebook and Instagram Pages while we do our thing. At times though I can be on my phone a little bit too long and I will look down to see this. Canuck giving me the puppy dog eyes. It's at that point I put my phone away and pay attention to him. Although now, Canuck has learned something new. If I'm on my cell phone too long and I'm not paying attention to him and if he can, he will grab my cell phone and throw it. That was a new experience today. LOL. :-)

As Canuck's molting continues, the new feathers on the back of his neck are starting to come in. In this photo you can see them coming in at various stages. All the way from the feather just starting to come out of the waxy coating(top right), right down to when the feather just starts emerging through the skin(bottom center, left)

Canuck has not been seen since Friday. I believe he has either been killed or somebody has taken him.

UPDATE:

Still no sign of Canuck.

A few leads have turned up nothing. Went and did a search at the PNE grounds including the Coliseum where a Crow was spotted inside. No result.

There was also a Crow spotted in Washington that matched his description, however the timeline may be off for it to be him. Still being looked into.

Last night we had a little impromptu vigil for Canuck out at the Block. I would like to thank everyone that came out yesterday in support of Canuck.

If anyone has ANY information on Canuck's location please contact me ASAP. Please keep your eyes and ears open. Everyone wants Canuck to come home, especially Cassiar. :-)

Thank you.

Shawn. :-)

Quote:
A French court has ruled in favour of a cockerel owner after her bird's early morning crowing provoked a noise pollution complaint from neighbours.

Maurice, who roosts on the picturesque isle of Oléron off the Atlantic coast, was accused of disturbing a retired couple who own a holiday home nearby.

News of his legal troubles flew around the world, gaining him a flock of supporters.

His owner, Corinne Fesseau, was cock-a-hoop at news of the ruling.

"It's a victory for everyone in the same situation as me. I hope it will set a precedent for them," she was quoted by AFP news agency as saying.

At a hearing in July, her lawyers had argued the complaint was ridiculous because crowing roosters were part of country life.

Ms Fesseau, who has lived on Oléron for 35 years, would have had to move or somehow silence Maurice if the judge had ruled against her.

She now will be given €1,000 (£900; $1,100) in damages from the plaintiffs instead, her lawyer said on Thursday.

@izzythepush,
I love to hear birds of any kind, whenever they decide to make their noise. I like the decision.

@edgarblythe,
It looks like a case of wealthy outsiders coming in and trying to take over. It was a holiday home that complained FFS.

I'm pleased the court made that decision.

Unfortunately not everyone feels the same about birdsong.
