@edgarblythe,

The yellow billed cuckoo.

I live in Dallas and used to hear and see them occasionally. They're a little bit bigger than the mockingbird, and the call sounds like something you'd hear in a jungle. Ka ka ka ka ka kwoop kwoop. It's unmistakable. Haven't seen or heard one in a while. They feed on tent caterpillars and the spraying for west Nile may have affected them.

@coluber2001,
I guess they don't live around here. Birds I used to see around seem to have fled. I haven't even seen sparrows. Mainly, it's mockingbirds, blue jays and cardinals. Woodpeckers used to hang around. I was happy they moved on, because their presence denotes diseased trees. In town there is more diversity. A few cranes are along the road. Even the vultures have backed off, somewhat. I guess all the new construction is to blame.

@farmerman,
I saw a photo of Canuck with a cheese slice in his beak, yesterday. The employees at McDonalds use that to lure him out of the restaurant.

@edgarblythe,
I saw a flock of ospreys once, but I now forget where - just that I must have been speeding by, and that was that, didn't stay to look harder. Baaaad.

@edgarblythe,
At Chessington World of Adventure you can feed those birds with little cups of nectar they sell for a quid each.

Last time I was there about four of them were perched on a really big bloke, and I mean really big. He looked quite scare and was saying to his children, yes, his children, 'I want them off, I want them off, please get them off!'
