Bush to skip NAACP meeting due to hostile comments

Friday, July 9, 2004 Posted: 4:06 PM EDT (2006 GMT)
KUTZTOWN, Pennsylvania (Reuters) -- President Bush has decided not to speak to the country's largest civil rights group, the White House said Friday, citing openly hostile comments by its leaders about the president.

The White House initially attributed Bush's decision not to accept the invitation to speak at the NAACP annual convention to a scheduling conflict. (Full story).

The convention opens Saturday in Philadelphia.

But White House spokesman Scott McClellan, traveling with Bush on a campaign bus trip through Pennsylvania cited "hostile political rhetoric about the president" from the group's leaders.

"It's disappointing to hear," McClellan said.

The Bush campaign has said it has made it a priority to reach out to African-Americans who traditionally favor Democratic candidates by a large margin.

Bush campaign spokesman Scott Stanzel said Bush's outreach to the black community would continue and would not be hurt by the NAACP flap.

McClellan said that "the president is going to reach out to everyone in the African-American community and ask for their vote based on his record and his vision for the country."

Our president the wimp.. Apparently he was afraid it would be a hostile crowd.
Mr. Bush only speaks publicly when his minions can control the audience.

The NAACP doesn't support the right, they only support free handouts and listing "black" as a handicap, they should be ignored.

So a Conservative president doesn't like angry Black folks, and hates to be criticized in public. This is new?

I am convinced that Karzak hates all groups who don't think like him, talk like him, look like him or smell like him!

By the way, can we get some air fresheners in here?

Bush has attended numerous black oriented functions in the last several weeks and months. He is declining the NAACP's invitation due to the open and insulting hostility of its leadership. It isn't much different than Kerry refusing to go on the O'Reilly factor.

He spoke to them in 2000, guess he figured it was a waste of time.

NAACP pretty much represents the liberal segment mostly so what does he have to gain there?

He also can't control the audience. If they ask a real question you can rest assured he will give a stupid answer. His handlers are deathly afraid of that.

Maybe we can get a transcript of the 2000 visit to see if that's the case...
