Another day when there is no God

I miss Calvin and Hobbes.

Best comic strip in history, in my view.

Just as we were leaving, we were joined by a group of turtle watchers from the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Their leader had a bucket of tiny turtle hatchlings. The group stood quietly behind an arched line in the sand as the baby turtles were released to make their important tract down the moonlit beach toward the frothy surf – a trip to be imprinted forever so that they might return to this very beach and bury their precious eggs for future generations. I kept thinking of their challenges. The odds are that only one in 1000 hatchlings reach adult maturity.

With excitement we watched as all twenty-seven loggerheads scrambled in the sand and were swept away by the mighty sea in a swimming frenzy. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. From the full moon to baby sea turtles it was an unforgettable evening.
