If you want to work on your own, start checking the want ads. From your post, all I can figure out is that you want to contract directly with an employer and not through an agency?

And, what do you mean by "very confused with my job"? Is it that you don't like your job, or that you feel you can't do it, or something else?

Okay, I think I understand you. You've been in this position for about 3 years and it's no longer challenging to you. So you want to advance your career but you're not sure how. But you do have security in your current job, which is good. Some of your friends have told you the best thing to do is work in another country, but you are unsure, plus you figure the opportunities will be good in China as things develop.

Anyway, I hope I'm right. :-D

I'd say, and this is advice I'd give to anyone in this position, not necessarily just someone in China, see what you can get out of the job before moving on. Even if you feel you have done everything that can be done, there may be a class you can take that the company will pay for. I know how much training costs, so anything you can get a company to pay for, well, that's a good thing. It could save you thousands of dollars.

And, are there opportunities for advancement? Working with really new equipment or software? Influencing the process by which the company obtains new software or hardware?

As a technical support engineer, what you need to do is know as many different types of software as you can. So it is legitimate to ask for training in new technologies, or for training to bring you up to speed on technologies that are changing. This will make you much more valuable to a prospective employer. Since you think you might change jobs, this will help you to get interviews and to do better with salary negotiations.

And, if it turns out you decide to stay where you are, you've advanced your career and not stood still. These are qualities that most employers look at when they are thinking about promoting people. Therefore, by getting more training, you could be positioning yourself for a raise or a promotion, which would also help to alleviate your boredom and give you more to strive for.

It is, though, also possible that either your company will not pay for training or they will try to get you to sign a long-term contract in exchange for training. In that case, I'd advise you to look for other work, and find some place that will give you training or will give you without so many strings attached. Training is a good investment in employees and companies are well-advised to do it.
