My daughter and her husband are in their thirties and interested in exploring the Washington area, and perhaps some day, live there. He will be a certified nurse and already an accomplished photographer. She is a director of development for a private agency. Most of her work has been with non-profit groups; she no longer wishes to run the an agency.
By necessity, it is vital they be near proper medical care. They have a hunger to find a place where artists still linger, individuals who write about life, theatre, etc.
I am trying to help her identify people who would be willing to share their knowledge re the area., spending some time interacting with her.
FOR YOUR PART, I NEED FOR YOU TO IDENTIFY YOUR LIVING AREA AND PROVIDE A SHORT BLUR ABOUT YOURSELF. IN SOME CASES, PROVIDING A COPY OF YOUR PROFILE MIGHT BE enough.
Hi, Mapleleaf. I am not from Washington State but some here are. Thinking..
Piffka is, but she isn't around lately.
Patiodog was from there but now lives in the midwest.
D'Artigan lives there.
Peace and Love lives there.
Husker lives there, in the eastern part of the state. I know there are more, perhaps they'll see this question.
Thanks, I can use the information.
Mapleleaf - in the portal ->region ->united states is the link to the washington state site - maybe you'll find some information there? At least as far as the state goes.
Lived in Seattle for 4 years. Rich artistic life, excellent health care (one of the nation's best teaching hospitals, anyway).
I live in Wisconsin now, though, so that's that.
I grew up in the Seattle area, but haven't lived there since '71.
I was friends back in the early seventies with a bunch of mds who studied in Washington, at both places, University of Washington and Washington State? I think. There are surely some superior places around Seattle, and past that I don't know.
Portland isn't all so far, though it is in Oregon, it is within range.
Hi Mapleleaf -- Ossobuco is right (Hi Osso!), I've been away from a2k for a while, traveled for a couple of weeks and came back home to be much busier than expected starting up a film program. How weird that on the day before I come back to a2k, you've mentioned my name.
I'd be happy to give your daughter some information... uh, I live in the southern Puget Sound area which is IMO the best place to live in Washington. <grin> All of Western Washington is in a milder, wetter climate than the larger eastern half... it is sometimes called the Wet Side, though I must say everybody has had to water like mad this spring & it appears we're going to have a record-breaking hot & dry summer. This side is more urbanized but there are plenty of rural areas, too.
From the little you've said, Mapleleaf, I'd recommend your daughter look at Vashon Island or Bainbridge Island, BBI being the slightly more expensive alternative. Both islands have 30 minute ferries going to Seattle where the best hospitals are (Providence and the University of Washington being the best, I think). Both of those islands are also hotbeds of artistic endeavor. Vashon is a little funkier, smaller and more isolated. BBI has a bridge on the far north side which links it to the Kitsap Peninsula and a super shopping area. The ferry landing town of Winslow on BBI is one of the few "walking" communities where you don't absolutely have to have a car.
It's probably a good idea for your d. & husband to start reading the newspapers of the area to get a better feel for the place. The Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer have good online editions. So does the the Tacoma News Tribune.
Welcome back, Piffka!
I see I spelled d'artagan's name wrong on my post above, Mapleleaf, if you had tried to PM him and had trouble.
Hi Mapleleaf....
Seattle is an awesome city. The "U District" is right next to the University of Washington, which has the best medical center/hospital.
d'Artagan and Seattle Friend would know some good places to live in Seattle.
Also, Seattle has a strong artists community.
Personally, I'm up in the foothills of Mount Rainier, on the western side. I'm not close to a medical facility. I'm in the middle of tall fir and cedar trees. Most of the people in my area are loggers and farmers.
I absolutely love where I live. I can't see another house and the birds sing to me. We have huge butterflies and tons of dragonflies. The pasture is full of wild daisies.
Hi Piffka!! good to see you!!
hugs,
PaL
:-)
The Children's Hospital in Seattle is excellent -- and an excellent place to work -- if the son-in-law is interested. I pushed paper there, and a nurse I knew from there gave it excellent reviews (though he wasn't to concerned with money, so I don't know about salary).
I didn't list Seattle Friend in my starter list at the top since she doesn't post here very much, but it would be neat if she appears..
I am thinking, Wy lives there too, doesn't she? Oh, and my super favorite, who never posts, Stoat, oh, dear Stoaty.
Yeah, Wy was at the Seattle get together a year or two ago.
Good stuff guys...thanks.
Mapleleaf -you've been missed
Piffka, g'day
You've been missed too. In the missing in action thread.
margo, I appreciate the thought. During the same time period, I stopped keeping up with my four bird feeders...unusual....don't know that I could tell you why, Possibly connected with my new medications???? But, it is pleasant when I appeal to A2K friends and they respond...kind of like a family
