@neologist,
Yeah, but who's going to believe FMB. Now, if Sam Harris said it. . . .

Why? Citing statements made by experts with bigger brains than one's own is a time-honored practice. I do a little of each at different times, anyway.

@FBM,
FBM...with all the respect in the world...Sam Harris ought not be giving suggestions about what is or what is not an intelligent or logical position to take on REALITY.

His take, for the most part, is nothing more than the reverse side of the coin for which he has so much contempt.

@FBM,
And what about your belief in past lives? And why are you trying to destroy peoples faith in Christianity? I am not attacking your Buddhism.

@Smileyrius,
There are or were those places called hell. But primarily hell is the state or condition of being without God in the afterlife.

With God we are restored and made anew and will not suffer the human condition of being miserable with anger and hatred in our hearts without Him.

Who said I'm a Buddhist? Who said I believe in past lives? I'm not attacking your religion as much as I'm attacking the claim that you have proof when you have none. You have nothing but faith-based rhetoric and extreme gullibility. If you were half as competent as you are confident, you would've realized that fuzzy photos with personal anecdotes don't add up to even circumstantial evidence, much less proof. Learn some basic logic, please.

Open my eyes, then. Show me some evidence instead of threatening me with eternal damnation and suffering by a god I don't even believe in and in a place that I don't even believe exists. Show me your Christian love and compassion by showing me some genuine evidence that your god exists. Not blurry photos and lame anecdotes. Evidence that we can test.

The photo is not blurry and my anecdotes are not lame. You may never see the truth.

My lost what?

Also, is that the attitude your Jesus told you to have?

Quote:
"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.' 44"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

He's not going to be very happy with you... Laughing

The Abrahamic religions: founded on threats of hellfire, damnation, murder, slavery and infanticide. And you're asking sane people to join up. Wao.

UPDATE

This is a photograph of the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) and He and His works are erroneously known as a "spirit orb" or "angel orb."
http://www.hauntedhovel.com/images/orb9.jpg
http://blogs.reuters.com/faithworld/files/2014/01/halo.jpg
The Halo can be seen in scripture as the Spirit of God alighting and remaining upon Jesus in bodily form.

Mathew 3:16. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

John 1:32. John testified saying, I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.

The photograph is of the Holy Spirit's bodily form.

Luke 3:22. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."

The Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) alighting and remaining upon Jesus in bodily form appeared as a Halo.

@Patches,
To clear it up, The words rendered Hell in your version of the bible are "γέεννα" (Ge henna) שְׁאוֹל Šʾôl (She'ol) which was later translated by the Greeks into "Ἅιδης" (Hades) and "tartaroo"

Ge henna is a literal place outside Jerusalem, the valley of the son of Hinnom. This is where the rubbish was thrown, it was laid with sulfur which kept burning which meant that anything thrown there, was destroyed. Interestingly, those who were not considered worthy of a proper burial i.e. lawbreakers, murderers etc. were also thrown there, but no suffering would be associated with this place, as not only would those thrown here be dead, the fire would cremate them.

She'ol/Hades is man's common grave, often referred to as "the pit". where both the righteous and the unrighteous abide, the etymology of this word includes aspects of "depth" "darkness" "dust/dirt" and "silence" which perfectly sum up death.

Tartaroo is a word which literally means "throw into Tartarus" the Greek Septuagint renders the word Tartarus in place of the Hebrew word for abyss, the deepest of the deep, a dark and gloomy sub terrain. The term is used as the place where God held the pre-flood rebellious angels while they awaited judgement. No humans are sent here.

Keep in mind that of the words that your bible renders as "Hell", none of them involve suffering, in fact, none of them suggest a conscious state or existence. what gives you the idea that Hell is a place of torment?

More importantly, If the hell you speak of does not originate from the bible, from where does it originate?

@Smileyrius,
I'll be away from my reference material for another 4 days. I never said that hell was a "place of torment." Besides from places of hell, it is the state or condition of being without God. And that this state or condition is a miserable one. Families are scattered throughout the Netherworld. God brings your family together to spend all of eternity with. This not not a threat. It is just the way it is. God is not to blame for a person not believing in His Son, Jesus.
