What good does religion offer the world today?

@izzythepush,
Not socialist at all. 46 million are living in poverty.

@Leadfoot,
So what are you talking about?

@izzythepush,
Well, this started from the perspective of Jesus. So let me ask you this.

Would you rather be broke and homeless in the middle east in 33 AD or today in the US?
From the perspective of the poor, this is a socialist paradise.

@Leadfoot,
I'd rather be where I am thanks. Being homeless in the US doesn't bear thinking about.

Anyone who has studied homelessness says it's far far worse your side of the pond. There's not really much in the way of hope.

If compare anything or anywhere to 33AD lifestyles you're going to come off better.

I think you're right about that, but we'd probably differ about the cause.

Greater monetary prosperity in a country can bring with it greater disillusionment and poverty of spirit. I volunteered at a homeless shelter for a weekend to have a small peek at the problem and poverty of spirit was the greater need in my opinion. Unfortunately the religion running the place had little to satisfy that need. The food was pretty good though.

@Leadfoot,
Over here homelessness and the suicide rate always rises when the Tories are in. It's not so much the wealth of the nation but how it chooses to spend it.

In regards to what you said about religious charities.

@izzythepush,
OK, so we don't really differ that much.
I would add that even the upper end are being stressed into increased suicide rates. They just do it in their McMansions and BMWs instead of on the street. They too are starving spiritually.

@Leadfoot,
Materialism is a problem, the World just doesn't have enough stuff to satisfy everyone. I heard that Johnny Depp spends $2m per month on his lifestyle.

I don't know how he manages to do it. I couldn't if I tried really hard.

@izzythepush,
And it would not surprise me to hear of Johnny's 'accidental' death of an overdose or some other unlikely scenario someday.

Here's an 'A list' of celebrities:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_drug-related_deaths

They call them accidents most of the time and use it as a reason for the war on drugs. They virtually never draw the conclusion that many of them were empty and ready to die of 'materialism'. I'm not condemning them, just pointing out the obvious.

@izzythepush,
It seems like a very foolish lifestyle, unless he gives most of it to charity.

"What good does religion offer the world today?"

I object to the idea religion only offers one good.
It's so much better than that.
It offers a whole bill of goods.

Shapes because of religion can be important to the imagination, like the crucifix. And religion also gives routine - it's one thing to knock people going to Church, but it's another to do so if one's attitude is to never acknowledge those same people if they didn't.

Just think of that for a second: attacking people for going to Church (which in truth can be fair), but doing so being the only reason why you'd acknowledge those same people!

Now that we know that right wing evangelicals have no real concern for Jesus... Who will carry the gauntlet of the, erm "truth"?

@TheCobbler,
We need not concern ourselves with anyone but ourselves in carrying that gauntlet. No one can carry it for anyone else - beyond what Jesus has already done

@Leadfoot,
Your massiah's message is quite clear; believe in me or suffer in hell after death. A message of fear, somewhat similar to what Trump is trying to sell to the American people. Fear sells.
