What good does religion offer the world today?

@Glennn,
That is presuming there is any real god lurking behind the pages of that barbaric book.

Religion must have a kernel of truth in order to lure thinking people to its banner. The biblical writers chose the Greeks many definitions of "love" to adulterate and bamboozle the meek.

The Bible does not have a monopoly on love, love is just one more casualty of the biblical plagiarists..

@TheCobbler,
And the meek shall inherit the earth. Whatever that means.

Why do people always blame God? Why don't they just grow up and take responsibility and the consequences for their own actions? I think freewill is one of the downfalls of humanity, free to cause havoc, burn their fingers and then complain to God or about him. Very childish I would think...

@cicerone imposter,
Daylight savings is when you delay or fast forward the collective reckoning of time, fantasy is when you stop the sun from encircling the earth.

Besides, it is widely believed the earth actually encircles the sun. Smile

@TheCobbler,
It's about the story when god stopped the sun. It extended daylight saving time for some. You do know a joke when you hear one, don't you?

@Amoh5,
Bad things happen and sometimes people need a scapegoat to console their pain and misery. So they invent a god and nemesis who makes it to rain on both the just and unjust simply to explain their inexplicable conundrums.

@TheCobbler,
I've got a bite! I've got a bite! Well pull it in!
But seriously, if that is your view of God then that's really sad... It's certainly not my view of God the Father of all living things...

@Amoh5,
You can believe in the tooth fairy if it consoles your pain but your sincerity alone does not make it so.

@TheCobbler,
If you see God as a tooth fairy, then you must be in pain my friend...
(not a tooth ache I would imagine, a brain ache perhaps?)

@Amoh5,
Religion left me in pain and brainless.

It took a while to unlearn but liberation from religion has saved my life from a living hell.

Now when I do good (and love) it comes solely from me... not some edict or law that I must obey, or else.

The Bible's New Testament talks negatively about being lukewarm for the Lord.

That being neither hot nor cold for god is worthy of god spitting a person out of his/her mouth.

I would rather be lukewarm and be spit out of God's mouth (I know this is gross and repulsive) than be a radical theist or atheist, regurgitated and be pooped out of God's butt...

Revelation 3:16
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

(I am not the one who chose the allegory but I will continue it to its logical progression if need be.)

Your conclusion that "he's in pain" is gratuitous and uncalled for. I see from my observation point that TheCobbler has more freedom from pain than you'll ever understand.

He has the freedom from fear of your "loving god," who would threaten you with untold suffering if you did not believe.

Heck, I saw all this as a young teenager when my siblings and I went to church.

@cicerone imposter,
LOL! The meek will have to throw off the shackles of religion before they will be worthy of this great and wondrous earth.

@TheCobbler,
It pains me to see my siblings slave over their religion. They pray for me every day, and I don't have the heart to tell them to stop.

@cicerone imposter,
My family is the same, they read my sensible anti-religion Facebook memes with silence. Then off to church they go to worship their hateful deity.

They purposefully spread this nasty tea party brand of religion to the next generation of my family perpetuating the hate for the next generation to have to heal...

Many of the millennials are not fully buying it...

@cicerone imposter,
Thank you CI you are right in your assessment.

I was taught by my preacher that if I left God I would be lonely.

Sure, I am occasionally lonely and that sometimes pains me.

But it is not the type of pain where I feel like I am being torn apart from the inside out and subjected to hell's fire and brimstone.

It is the kind of pain the reminds me I am but a humble human being and that humility is required for good living.

@TheCobbler,
I was only being sarcastic and playful towards your comments about God, no offence or ill- feelings intended. I am a Christian indeed and I do value human life or my fellow human beings as Lord Jesus instructed.
But as I always say if atheism, theism or whatever works for you or makes you a better human being then that's awesome, afterall that is the objective.
Just because I'm a Christian doesn't mean I don't have a sense of humour. But I do give my condolences to those who have had an unhappy ordeal with Bible bashers.
I just think its not God's fault why people end up in a bottomless pit from listening to other people's twisted perspectives on the bible.
The spirit of God the Father is within all of us and all living things, so its up to us to determine whether there is anything good or worth reading in the bible, not because some bible bashing idiot told you something.
That's why I don't recommend any tv evangelists to anybody, they are only after your money.
I am just a bible moralist, I love the moral character of Lord Jesus and read only his words in the bible, nothing else. I by-pass all the fairy-tale stuff.
As a Christian I see God Heavenly Father as "the spirit of Family" which belongs to all living things. The spirit of family is about helping and respecting one another which is critical for the survival of any specie.
"Lord Jesus is the Human Family spirit of God"

Similar story to my own, but I had just enough brain left to realize that maybe the baby should not be thrown out with the bath water.
