Anyone take the time to listen to the lyrics of that Refreshments tune?
"I've seen the Devil, I've been through hell...
I've seen the face of evil, and I can tell he's doing very well."
Bluesmen have always had disturbing interactions with, insights about, and special arrangements with, the Devil, ya know:

This song, done by Tampa Red in 1931, closely mirrors the melody of the Mississippi Sheiks' great classic, "Sittin on top of the World." If you are familiar with Robert Johnson will also hear "Come on, into my Kitchen" here.
Tampa Red wrote another classic, recorded by many: "When things go Wrong with You." The melody and cadence is also very similar to "Sittin on Top of the World." Most covers of it leave out most of the lyrics, so I'm including it, too.

Tampa Red frequently collaborated with Big Maceo Merriweather. Here they team up in 1941 to cut a now-classic tune that has since been covered by everybody from Chuck Berry to the Rolling Stones to Eric Clapton.

Elvis stole this tune from Big Boy and made a hit out of it, eh?
I remember years ago hearing this for the first time by Elvis and thinking it sounded out of character for him. I knew he must've gotten it from someone else. Awesome song.

Here's a classic Chuck Berry song (well, they're all classics, but...), covered many times by various artists over the years, "Promised Land." Great tune covering the USA in lyrics. Johnny Johnson on piano.
You can many similarities to the old "Wabash Cannonball" tune, if you listen.

Here's a couple tunes from the great Isley Brothers, who Jimi Hendrix used to play with. The first one, from 1959, was featured in the movie "Animal House." Check out the gyrations by these guys, eh? They put their hearts into a tune.
A lot of people think the Beatles wrote the second on. They covered both of these tunes and were heavily influenced by the Isleys. John Lennon said that there was a time when the band put the "w000000ooo" filler, which they stole from the Isleys into every song they ended up writing.

Many artists, from Jerry Lee Lewis to the Rolling Stones, have covered this classic tune ("Down the road apiece"). I really like these refreshment guys. They know their ****, eh?

That Refreshment cover made me think of Big Joe Turner and his boogie-woogie piano player, Pete Johnson. This tune is from 1938. They were rocking 80 years ago.

I work hard for my Baby, she treats me like a slave....
Bitch must be tired of livin, I'll put her six feet in her grave
I like Elmore Leonard. He practices word economy also.
We went to see "Turkey Johnson and the Pluckers" on Saturday PM.
His band plays, what they call "BLUES GRASS"
Lotsa dobro and shitty guitars.(not the playing, they were just really cheap sounding ). I think Turkey wanted it that way.
