This classic tune from Robert Johnson, "Walkin Blues," is often referred to as the "Delta Anthem."

By comparing these two, you can see the transition from Robert Johnson, doin his "down home," unaccompanied acoustic style in the Delta in 1936 (Delta Blues), to the electrified, full-powered sound of Elmore James when, 15 years later, the same music had been brought up to the South Side of Chicago (so-called "Chicago Blues).

And here's yet a third rendition which is kind of an "intermediate" version done by James around the same time, with Sonny Boy Williamson on harp, which is "less country," but also "less citified."

John Lee Williamson (the original Sonny Boy) around 1945. Junior Wells turned this into a big hit in the 1950's.

The acoustic albums seemed to be all the rage for a while in the 90's, and that one was played at full blast in the car for about a year. Drove the better half mad.

Here's another classic tune by Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell--one of the best blues duos in history--kinda like Brownie and Sonny, ya know?

This little tune was written by Carr and recorded in 1935, a year before Robert Johnson did "Love in Vain."

This tune from Sugar Boy Crawford, "Jockamo" from 1954 was later flat out stolen by the Dixie Cups, who made a ton of money from it while claiming to have written it themselves (calling it "Iko, Iko"). It has been covered by many others (without stealing credit), too, of course.

It is about the rowdy, competitive, and often deadly, "indian" tribes which come out on Mardi Gras in Nawlins, and includes some of their chants (which seem to have been derived from African languages via the Caribbean).

1951. Sun Records. Memphis, Tennessee. Howlin Wolf, with Ike Turner (no Tina) on keyboards. A classic.

@layman,
Some commentary:

Quote:
“The first major breakthrough Sam made was with Howlin’ Wolf,” argues T Bone Burnett. “That’s when he started bringing the bass and drums up loud. Back in those days the bass and drums were background instruments; it was all about the horns and the piano, the melody instruments, and Sam brought the rhythm section right up front, and that became rock’n’roll. That was a big shift.

“In some ways “How Many More Years” by Wolf would be the first rock’n’roll song because that has the guitar lick that became the central guitar lick in rock’n’roll, and that’s the first time we heard that played on a distorted guitar. It was an old big band lick, turned into something completely fresh.”

This tune from 1931 by Tampa Red has the exact same melody as the Mississippi Sheiks classic "Sittin on Top of the World," with different lyrics
