Antique Pin has chinese/japanese symbols that need translating

Hi, I have an antique peacock pin that was given to me by my grandmother and she was given it by her great great grandmother. On the back of this peacock pin are 4 either japanese or chinese symbols which I would like translated if possible so I can learn of the history of this item my grandmother held so dearly and really wanted me to have it. I have taken pictures of the item and uploaded them to the following site:

It's pretty much impossible to read those characters - they're very worn and obscured by the pin. Do you have a photo of the front of the brooch?

Can we see the front?

The clasp is a better clue than the stamps for dating this.
