I've come to think it's a lost art. These days everyone has an opinion and will fight to the death to speak it. But what happened to the idea of sitting quietly for a moment and listening to the other guy's point of view and digesting it before you speak?

It's nothing new. G.I.Gurdjieff developed his "system" on the basis that we have an inability to focus.
Quite a common experience by those who indulge in joke swapping sessions is that they go away remembering their own jokes.
Trying to keep quiet in a serious conversation is necessary so that you can give that person a good opinion that s/he might consider after the talk. People should know when to shut up and give the floor to others.
