WASHINGTON - The Army will prevent soldiers in units set to deploy to Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites) from leaving the service at the end of their terms, a top general said Wednesday.
The announcement, an expansion of an Army program called "stop-loss," means that thousands of soldiers who had expected to retire or otherwise leave the military will have to stay on for the duration of their deployment to those combat zones. The expansion affects units that are 90 days away or less from deploying, said Lt. Gen. Frank L. "Buster" Hagenbeck, the Army's deputy chief of staff for personnel. Commanders have the ability to make exceptions for soldiers with special circumstances; otherwise, soldiers won't be able to leave the service or transfer from their unit until they return to their home base after the deployment.

dys, There was also a situation here in Florida that was rather duplicitous. Recruiters were telling members of the National Guard who had fulfilled their obligations, that they should re-up to keep from being sent to Iraq. Scare tactics are the most despicable of subterfuge.

Sorry that I can't give you a link, but it was on the local news here. Of course, everyone blamed everyone else. Rolling Eyes

I will re-post something that I wrote in ThePatriot's posting earlier:

I remember signing my contract for military service many MANY years ago.

One of my favorite lines that could be found in several places on said contract was the 'Needs of the service' clause.

I was guaranteed the military service school of my choice, but my final MOS could be changed based on the needs of the service.

I was signing for a term of 4 years in the regular army, which could be extended based on the needs of the service.

I was promised my first duty posting in Germany subject to (you guessed it) the needs of the service.

A person gives up a lot of rights and privileges that civilians take for granted in order to be paid sub-minimum wage, be on duty all hours of the day and night, to be sent off to foreign lands at a moments notice and to be looked down upon by the common citizen.

We did it and many more young people sign up every day for this because of a sense of duty or honor ... or just for a different kind of job at the 'sharp end'.

In doing this, they place themselves at the NEEDS OF THE SERVICE.
