The handover that became a shambles: ten U-turns on the road to 'peace'

1 -The Prime Minister

The appointment of Iyad Allawi as Iraq's interim Prime Minister this weekend was being seen as an American-backed coup which wrong-footed Lakhdar Brahimi, the United Nations envoy supposed to be putting together the interim government which will wield "sovereignty" after 30 June.

The more that is learnt, however, about the sudden emergence of Mr Allawi, a man close to the CIA and MI6, the more it appears the appointment of the new government has been hijacked by the ambitious politicians of the Iraqi Governing Council - the very body it was meant to replace. The only question is whom the IGC was conspiring with as its members picked jobs for themselves.

But whatever the answer, the appointment of Mr Allawi is the culmination of a series of spectacular U-turns that has given President George Bush and his administration the appearance of lurching in a panic from one flawed policy on Iraq to the next. Since last November every decision seems to have been taken with an eye to one political event alone: Mr Bush's bid for re-election this November.

Originally, it was Ahmad Chalabi the Americans - and in particular Donald Rumsfeld's Pentagon - appeared to be grooming as their future tame man in Baghdad, but in recent weeks Mr Chalabi has fallen from grace in Washington. He has now been accused of deliberately duping the US and Britain into war with false intelligence about Iraq's non-existent weapons of mass destruction; some even allege he did at the behest of Iranian intelligence.

Militants hold 50 hostages · £4 gallon looms as battle rages

Nick Mathiason and Mark Townsend
Sunday May 30, 2004
The Observer

Oil prices are set to surge after al-Qaeda gunmen killed at least 16 people, including a Briton, and seized 50 hostages yesterday during an indiscriminate rampage through the Saudi Arabian city of Khobar.
In a day that left the oil city, in the east of the country, littered with bodies and bullet-riddled buildings and cars, the terrorists attacked four compounds housing foreign workers, seized American and Italian hostages and fought running battles through the streets.

The body of the Briton, named locally as Michael Hamilton, an employee of the Middle East oil company Apicorp, was tied to a car and dragged more than a mile before being dumped near a bridge, according to witnesses.

Late last night an armed siege was developing, with suspected Islamic militants holding the hostages on the sixth floor of Oasis, a high-rise expatriate housing complex. Most of the captives were said to be Italian and the rest Americans and Arab Christians.

It sems that Osama wanted the US military out of Saudi Arabia for more than purely ideological reasons. Maybe he wanted no strong military presence in the way when the Saudi civil war got under way. Ah, the son of an oil family involving the whole world in his family fued? And the phony cowboy dolt that pretends to be the Pres. of the USA gave into terrorists and pulled the US military out of Saudi Arabia as per al-Quada demands.

Yeah, Cheney going after a safely contained Saddam was so much more important than utilizing all the resources to round up al-Qaeda! The stupididity and greedy, arrogance of the Neo Fascist Cabal never ceases to amaze!

When do we hold the treason trials for the idiots in the Cheney/Puppet Bush/Rusmfeld Crime Org.?
