Scout said, "Okay, let's just cut corners here, I'll give you timeshare in the doghouse, and half my kibble, agreed?"

"Is this before or after the first litter of pups"?

At the mention of "pups," Scout suddenly became embarrassed because he remembered that thanks to his "friend," Dr. Sirius, there would be no wolf pups in his and Fifi's future.

Each night, when Fifi was sleeping, he would leave the forest and howl outside Elinor's door; she threw things at 'that stupid mutt,' in response.

Let sleeping dogs lie, we say; so why don't dogs say that about humans?

Scout was getting depressed with his situation, and once again, he started drinking toilet water.

"Not again!" he chastised himself, remembering his shame at finding himself compulsively drinking from toilets in public restrooms while in human form.

It was night again; day had left so slowly; the lingering flavour of toilet water still touched the tips of Scout's teeth: things passed so slowly- but all the while, he considered his love for Elinor; it would not weaken, whether he be a man, a dog, or a giant cockroach: and, in the middle of his musing and his scratching himself, he formulated a plan.

Elinor had her own problems as well, namely her relapse into puking up furballs, then eating them, then puking again, then eating them....it was a vicious cycle for both Scout and Elinor.

Elinor wondered, at times, what would have happened had she stayed with Scout, in stead of going off with Linton; her love for Linton never was true: her love for Scout lasted the ages-- but she was happily oblivious of his fate.

Elinor did ponder the 80s once in a while, when lucid, and remembered the good times she and Scout had as The Singing Dogs, with a best-selling Christmas song and all the kibble they could eat.

Elinor, though human, had an unusual taste for cold dog food and leashes; Scout thought of this fondly, left Fifi's side, and went to her apartment at Northwestern, howling toward her window again.

Elinor woke, looked down from her window, and saw a familiar muzzle barking out "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear."

Just then, the very big neighbor dog, Rufus, a vicious brown and black-spotted rottweiler that had been bred as a fighting dog and had won many bloody battles, was awoken by the noise--when he saw Scout, he was up in a flash, and he charged at the much smaller dog with bloodlust in his eyes.

As he approached Scout, his eyes cleared and Rufus realized he had just challenged a wolf to a fight.

Scout's ear was mauled off, au Tyson, but the shooting pain could not stop his love; the rucus outside could not stop the 'love' between Linton and Elinor, either.

Linton, who had been sleeping next to her on the bed, woke up and ran over to the window where Elinor was watching the bloody dogfight below.

Suddenly, both dogs looked up at the window at the same time, and, together took a running leap, and clinging to the ledge, clambered up into the room, slavering (menacingly.)
