Style of dress is what many women look at when considering a man for a mate. One of the many superficial factors.

Factors is all about numbers. Numbers that are multiplied together are called factors of the final number.

Number crunching is an activity sociologists practice. For example it can prove that 100% of accident victims were fed on milk in their formative years and thus justify starting the little monsters on steak and chips to see if that will improve things.

"Number than yours," said the Kossack about his frozen toes to his comrade soldier. "It's time for drastic measures, and oh yes, bring the vodka!"

Things are not what they seem. We think life is one way and it turns out to be something quite different.

Diff'rent strokes for different folks, they say. They used to say "Different ships, different long splices" and these are essentially the same; so, whatever floats your boat.

Boat hiring charges on the Cam are ridiculous. I was once half way through the procedure with an intellectual in a flower-print frock and some half-wit bellowed through a megaphone "Come in number 69" and I had to row over to the landing stage and cough up another fiver to get him to keep quiet.

Quiet achiever of the Australian Labour Party is the new leader of the opposition Kevin Rudd. He has been climbing the "ladder of opportunity" all his life, rising from the backblocks of coastal Queensland to be a contender for the leadership through sheer determination.

Determination was all that Alex could offer as he braved the Sahara with a three-legged camel and a waterbottle that the Riffs had shot full of holes during the last, desperate sortie. How he wished that, instead of this madcap desert adventure, he had stayed home with his dear mama in Little Piddlington.

Piddlington, third Duke of Baconsfield, Cavalier of the Order of the Goiter, entered into the library from his bedchambers. There was something soothing about the smell of the place, something that always lifted his spirits, and this time was no exception.

"Place your bets, mesdames et messieurs", murmured the croupier, as James tried to ignore the ample bosom of the lovely but slightly drunk woman sitting opposite him by the roulette wheel. Now, he knew, was not the time to get distracted.

Anytime I see a lady showing off her assets I think she must be searching for something. What it is I don't know.

Know yourself is inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. The phrase has been attributed to at least five ancient Greek sages.

Sages were held in very high regard in those ancient days. Today, many would rather speak nonsense than listen to sound, intelligent counsel.

Counsel or a counsellor gives advice, more particularly in legal matters.
The legal system in England uses the term counsel as an approximate synonym for a barrister-at-law, and may apply it to mean either a single person who pleads a cause, or collectively, the body of barristers engaged in a case.
