Roles, which are leads in films, are not often offered to older women. Meryl Streep seems to be a notable exception.

Exception is not usually taken at the Duchess's dinner-parties when the Duke falls face first into his soup. He is allowed to remain sleeping although a napkin is used to prevent the spray from his snoring reaching the other guests.

Guests are always afforded special treatment. The wise ones know they should not overstay their welcome.

Welcome back! Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness, thou foster-child of silence and slow time.

Time can be measured in a number of ways. For instance, we can measure the passage of time via the orbital motion of Earth and other planets in the solar system. Or we can measure time based on the rotation of Earth on its axis with respect to the stars.

Stars are popularly represented as having five or six points, which is patently absurd. They are globular.

Globular shapes are generally pleasing to the eye. Suggestive combinations of them can be seen in most of the works of Henry Moore, the renowned chisel expert.

Expert or specialist? The basic difference between an expert and a specialist is that a specialist has to be able to solve a problem and an expert has to know its solution.

Solution is a word usually meaning substances dissolved in water. Water is a substance of prime importance to human life because beer without it isn't worth drinking at any price never mind 2 quid a pint.

Pint of beer anyone? Pouring the perfect pint can take time. Avoid the practice of pouring the beer at a thirty-degree angle and letting the beer roll down the side of the glass.

Glass-eyed he staggered homewards from the inn but never arrived. They found him, barely conscious, on the morrow, in a ditch.

Ditch or dump a lover. This means severing all ties, usually unceremoniously or irresponsibly.

Irresponsibly rushing into marriage is a disaster. Engagements should be five years' minimum.

Minimum wage increases are good news for workers. Business leaders on the other hand say, wage increases could mean higher prices.

Prices of oil have come down in recent weeks, to my surprise. It seems to be the only commodity that suffers such huge highs and lows.

Lows in the upper 50's tonight. Highs in the lower 80's tomorrow is the present weather forecast.

Forecast sounds quite good for the equivalent of our March, but where has the Centigrade gone? I don't think in Fahrenheit any more.

More of the same in centigrade if you like. How does a low of 10c during the night, and a high of 27c during tomorrow appeal to your luscious body?

Body luxuriating in the thought of lying naked on the 27 degree sand, as long as there isn't a chilly southern wind. I don't look so good in goose pimples.

Pimples can be very off-putting. The worst are clusters of them on big fat bottoms.
