Please help Identify my Grandfathers Charcoal Sketch

Reply Mon 29 Sep, 2014 07:45 am
My grandfather recently passed, and I inherited this Charcoal Sketch. The only thing we know about is it was given to him by a wealthy man he once helped move. There is an indistinguishable signature in the lower left corner, it may start with an E. Sorry for the poor image quality. I greatly appreciate any help in identifying the work or the artist

@ender10302,
Quite impossible to tell. There's no way it is even recognizable enough to determine any known artist. I predict you won't find much help. For heavens sake, take a better picture, particularly a close-up of the signature.

@ender10302,
I think it is a sketch of a man with a scythe.

@Lordyaswas,
That was very in-scythe-ful of you.

@Ragman,
I forgot to mention that in my opinion, it should be hung portrait, as opposed to landscape as the photo suggests.

People usually scythe standing up, I've found.

Unless there is a lot of cyder available.

@ender10302,
This is a work by Van Gogh, 1885, named Peasant reaping.

Yours is a copy, almost certainly..

@ender10302,
My deepest thanks to the one person who actually helped.

I would also like to offer my most sincere respects to the various wits who replied. It may ease your mind to know the picture is hung in the correct orientation. The picture was taken as a landscape as it improved the quality slightly.
I humbly apologize for letting my curiosity get the better of me and seeking help with a poorly lit Ipod picture. How dare I want to find out something about my grandfathers legacy without the proper equipment? I do not know what came over me. Next time, I will be sure to take a photography class and buy fancy camera before I dare impede on your general greatness.

@ender10302,
Oh don't get in such a snit.

You came here, got free help, now bugger off.

It's really bad form to show sarcasm when you've put forth a bad picture, yet still managed to get an answer.

Especially when the humor was light hearted and not malicious.

Precisely.

Now for a scientific informational break, with an advertisement.

@chai2,
Ooh, don't take things so seriously, really resulting to vulgar language in response to a conversation you were not taking part in just seems beneath you. I was just giving credit where credit is due. On that note, thanks for your sage advise I intend to follow it. Please kindly have a great day and lead an excellent life.

@ender10302,
I'm taking things too seriously? How long did it take you to compose that pompous, self entitled load of bull ****, meant to insult people that are actually quite kind and helpful? The fact they poked a little gentle fun at your poor presentation shows you have a stick up your ass, probably with a hook on the end.

Haven't you ever heard the expression, don't look a gift horse in the mouth?

That's sage advice

I shouldn't take all the credit for working out what the subject matter was within the first two replies, so I therefore feel duty bound to pass the red ribbon onto Timur on this occasion, as he actually found the specific artist.

Well done, Timur.

@Lordyaswas,
That's better.

It looks really nice in my hair. Kinda like a poodle after it's been to the groomer.

It's quite a ribbon.
