Looks Greek to me.

I'll think on it.

@Frank Apisa,
Upon further reflection...the column capitals look more Roman than Greek.

Once again, I am thinking Sicily.

@Frank Apisa,
Roman. Not Sicily.
(And c.i. hasn't been there - but passed in a distance of a couple of miles.)

@timur,
I'm in awe of your knowledge about archaeology. Where did you learn it?

@Walter Hinteler,
The tower gate at Xanten has some similarities to other places I have visited in Germany. I love Germany for its various architectural styles whether old or new, and the cleanliness of the majority of places I have visited. As a matter of fact, I was looking for tours to Berlin again....

@cicerone imposter,
University Bochum. It was a two-week "workshop" (= we were allowed to "dig" a bit). It was just about the basics ...

@cicerone imposter,
c.i., we have been nearly there when we made the break on the Rhine on the drive from Amsterdam to us ... ten (?) years ago.

@Walter Hinteler,
I still remember that trip very well, because as soon as we hit the German border, you stepped on the accelerator - and zoom we went! The stop at the lake's cafe was a real treat. Also the river-front restaurant where we had lunch when you met us in Bonn was also excellent!

@timur,
I found the same picture, and also visited Amsterdam several times, but can't make out the man on the horse.
