What do I do, I graduate the 29th of May and I have no idea what I want to do now, I just want to know how other people felt when they graduated college.
Hey, aimee. I graduated college in mid semester, and immediately started substitute teaching until I could get a full time teaching position.
What is your major?
I went to Law School right after graduating college, mainly because there's very little that one can do with a Philosophy major. But my heart wasn't in it and I quit practicing about 4 years after graduating L. S. And now I'm in IT. Go figya.
Well, do graduate, that won't hurt. Figure out the rest later. I just happened to know that I wanted to be a chef halfway through my English degree, so I started pursuing that right after graduation.
Philosophy, Jes? Upon my word.
Oooh, that was a tough stretch for me, aimee. I loved college, graduated with highest honors (I forget what it was called, that wasn't quite it) with a degree in English with an emphasis on creative writing, and... nuttin'. Bookstores wouldn't hire me. Just absolutely nuttin'.
That stretch was actually really good preparation for being a stay-at-home mom -- I remembered what was bad about it and defended against it. (Not having enough to occupy my mind, mostly.)
Anyway, I eventually found some little OK job (used bookstore), and decided to go back for my master's -- in Deaf Education. That launched me to my next phase, coordinator positions and then director of service agencies.
So I do think your major has a lot to do with it -- notice us English and philosophy majors (didn't know that, Jes!). I know another philosophy major who then went back for a master's in Parks Management or something. I know a lot of people who got the more liberal arts type degrees and then went and got another more utilitarian degree.
I don't regret the major, though, I loved it, and think it gave me a solid background that I can use for all sorts of things. Like, I currently have a 100% success rate in grant writing -- every grant I've applied for has come through. That's a social services skill (mostly, the way I've been using it), but comes from creative writing.
So, let us know what area you're in, helps us advise. But you'll be fine!!
Well I was going to be a teacher \ mountain guide, I'm way away from those 2.
After I graduated from college, I decided to keep up with the things I had done in college, and make sure I ended everyday drunk. It was fun, but didn't make finding a job any easier.
I was an English major and was hired as part of the faculty of a small, exclusive girls boarding school.
I ran the bookstore, helped in the library, coached dramatics, taught a poetry seminar, developed an ecology course for the biology department, and taught archery.
Then I decided grad school would be easier.
English Litrature major intended to go to law school one day. That one day has not come along yet.
I still don't know what to do, and probably never will. One time I bumped into a biker, and he picked me up off the ground, and said, "I'm in a good mood, so I'll let you choose the way I kill ya'." To me that is what choosing a career is like. You just try to pick what's least painful.
Yeah, Philosophy. Plato and everything. I'm still stumped when people ask me what I wanna do. I usually say Data Analyst as it's an answer. Eh, it's an okay answer.
well, I am a sociology major with a minor in women's studies graduating from a liberal arts college. I have no clue what I want to do. well I kinda have a clue. I interned at a battered women's counseling center this semester and there is a position there called a safe plan advocate, they go into courts with women, help them fill out restraining orders, and be morally supportive to them while they are in front of the judge... they also refer them if they think the women need counseling. the training is free, but I won't be able to take the training until september. what am I going to do until then?
I forgot to mention I work as a photographer, for right now the studio has made me an assistant manager, but I don't want to work there all my life, the photography studio is in a mall... I don't wnat to be the most under paid college graduate in the world. (I make $7 an hour) since I am now an assistant manager I know what everyone makes... I make the least money, and even the people below me make more money.) that's another story all together.
I never graduated....I did get my GED though.....
at least you got that... some people don't even do that.

I would stick to that. With your resume, Bush will have no new jobs for you.
oh boy don't get me started on Bush... I am very liberal in my views.... ok next subject, if I speak I will get in to trouble!!!!!!
Quite frankly, I think the GED is one of the best decisions ever made in the field of education. Often the public schools inhibit truly gifted and creative folks.
In many school systems here in Florida, an alarming number of students will not graduate because they failed the FCats. What a crock of bull ****.
Wouldn't it be interesting to see if Bush(Jeb or George W.) could pass those ridiculous tests?
I am no Bush fan either aimeemarie, and I'm Canadian!
