Caught Lying: Diplomat's E-Mail Prove Berg in U.S. Custody

NEWSDAY Family members provided e-mails Thursday that say Nicholas Berg was held by the U.S. military before he was kidnapped and beheaded, but the government contends the messages were based on erroneous information.

Berg's family has called on the U.S. government to tell all it knows about its contacts with the 26-year-old businessman in the weeks before his body was found last weekend in Baghdad and a gruesome video that showed his beheading was posted on the Internet.

To back its claims that Berg was in U.S. custody, the family on Thursday gave The Associated Press copies of e-mails from Beth A. Payne, the U.S. consular officer in Iraq.

"I have confirmed that your son, Nick, is being detained by the U.S. military in Mosul. He is safe. He was picked up approximately one week ago. We will try to obtain additional information regarding his detention and a contact person you can communicate with directly," Payne wrote to Berg's father, Michael, on April 1.

Payne repeated that Berg was "being detained by the U.S. military" in an e-mail the same day to Berg's mother, Suzanne. The next day, Payne wrote that she was still trying to find a local contact for the family, but added that "given the security situation in Iraq it is not easy."

U.S. officials say Berg was detained by Iraqi police March 24 and was never in the custody of American forces. Berg is believed to have been kidnapped days after Iraqi police or coalition forces released him April 6.

You realize Karl Rove isn't as smart as we were led to believe.

They usually lie with good reason, so the suspicions concerning the genuineness of that video may have more to commend them than initially widely believed. Rolling Eyes

According to the right, everyone is a liar except Bush. This is the sort of thing you encounter when one partner in a marriage is a drunk and the other one ignores the behavior, or enables it.

Bush can just kick back and let his enablers lie, and lie, and lie for him.

Even the e-mails in the article as "false." Absolutely bizarre!

No, I think Rove is as smart as the mythology suggests.

It's utterly astounding that, given all that has gone wrong for this administration, and for all the deceits that it has been caught in, and for the debt that has been incurred, and for the economy...that Bush's numbers are above 10%. That's an accomplishment.

I'm pretty certain that his fundamental task now is to concentrate almost entirely on the key states. Iraq is out of his control, and he's quite smart enoiugh to have known that for a long time. Other individuals in the administration too, like Rumsfeld or Cheney or Wolfowitz are not going to be under his control either, certainly not in the manner which precludes them screwing up re voter concerns.

The mistake the Dems could make is to assume the battle is won or nearly won now. It will be in the election where Rove's organization and real skills (despicable though they are) will come into play effectively.

The entire Berg affair is suspicious, from head to toe, and with the release of Mrs. Berg's e-mail to the media, it's clear the Pentagon, as well as the Bush administration, is lying.

Now the question begs, why?

Because the Bush administration not only knew, but ordered the abuse of Iraqui prisoners in an attempt to get information from them. Oh, I'm sure Bush didn't call up the prison and order the specific acts, but I have little doubt that he set the environment for the abuse to take place.

Same reason we're getting a lot of reports out of Guantanamo about abuse there. This is Bush policy.

Now we're seeing the same tactics in the Berg fiasco. Truth doesn't seem to mean anything to Bush and his cronies. Any lie will do to pull their fat asses out of the fire for yet another day.
