Welcome to a2k, eli. There are things to learn about using a2k, and people will mostly be helpful about that.

One thing is that there are as many forums(subjects) as there are tags.
Another is that we argue a lot. Some of the argueing is excellent debate, and some is name calling chaos. Some of it is a mix of those. Don't be intimidated, eh? People post from many parts of the world. People who show up often, some of us here for a long time, tend to skew as older folks than on many websites.

If you find you don't want to see someone's posts at all, you can click on their user name at the top of one of his or her posts and that will bring you to their profile. Under their avatar, there's a choice to ignore someone, and then their posts will disappear. (You can also make them reappear.)

In general, a2k has posters from around the world, and has a fairly high level of intelligent discourse.

Lately it has been contaminated (a bit) by a cabal of political leftists who think name-calling is the way to go, so the discourse is not what it once was. But the quality of conversation here is still better than it is on many other sites.

Freedom of Speech is strongly valued here. If you can avoid the sort of posts that would get you in trouble with the police, avoid posting pornography, and avoid posting spam advertisements, you should be OK.

Not only do some members know each other on Facebook, there is actually supposed to be a parallel a2k on Facebook. I don't know much about it though, as I've never seen the point of Facebook and have never signed up.

Some of the members also visit each other in real life. Now and then there are mentions of an "a2k get together" in some city or other. I don't see the point in that either, but to each their own I guess.

I am not saying that all leftists here are of the name-calling variety. I enjoy my occasional conversations with the intelligent leftists who grace this site.

Coldjoint usually doesn't post in the threads that I follow. But from what I have read of his posts, he does not initiate name-calling, but only responds in kind when people initiate name-calling against him.

There is more than one moderator, I believe, but the member known as Jespah is chief among them. We've been in operation for quite a number of years, 15 or more anyway. I'm sure someone who actually keeps track of such trivia can helpme out with exact figures. Just about all of us old-timers who've been here since the start are alumni of a former New York Times forum that was called Abuzz. When that went out of operation, some of us started up A2k and soon recruited a legion of new members.

You've already been directed to the site's TOS which gives you the COC rundown. As a practical matter, this is probably the most free, anything goes, liberal site that I know of. Virtually anything goes as long as you're not trying to sell anything. Blatant commercial spam will be yanked by the mods and the offending poster banned. Other than that, nothing is sacred. Even very bad language is grudgingly tolerated.

Many of us are also on FaceBook but not all of us and the two sites really have nothing much in common. FB seems to be where some A2k members defect to if they get tired of the relatively anarchic atmosphere here. Smile

You seem to have a good sense of humour, which is a definite plus here. Welcome, and -- enjoy!!!
