@Frank Apisa,
Nice photos, Frank.

I heard a factoid on the radio today.

New York gets on average 15 times more snow than the South Pole.

@Frank Apisa,
Before 1950 or so, there was a quality of life in NYC that was much nicer, in my opinion. Since then the city became a place for the wealthy, the working poor, immigrants, young people, and a few demographics that gravitated to the city.

And, oh yes, tons of tourists; domestic and international. In my opinion, NYC is just a focal point of the east coast. Like the saying, "all cats look gray in the dark," so do all cities look the same in the dark, in my opinion.

@Frank Apisa,
I did enjoy them, and you know I like New York, it's the belly of my childhood, however short the time. Oh, maybe not, the esophagus of my childhood since it was only one memorable year (+ a couple of short later visits). Evanston, Illinois was the belly.

The thing with the Times photos that hits me first is the slickness, which made me think, I bet Winogrand photo'd New York.

Yeh, he did photo NY, but I can't find a site yet with only those.

@ossobuco,
I remember when I first saw Winogrand photos, probably early eighties. How messy, not re the subjects but for angling of the camera and so on! Not Cartier Bresson.. I got over that forthwith. I've a big fat book of his from back then, need to relook.

There re quite a few places in New York which I liked very much (Washington Heights, Washington Square and some parts of Brooklyn, Governor's Island ...)

The NYPL has some excellent photos in their Digital Galleries

As an aside: by pure change I found out some time ago, that a relative lived in New York from the 1850's onwards

(I stayed 3mins walk away from where this uncle lived, and 30 mins by public transport from the place of his widow ...)

Glad you are all getting a kick out of those photos. They are terrific.

One of the things I note in the captions, is the use of the definite article very often, as in "The photographer..." I gotta wonder what that is about in the NY Times...which uses it all the time. Why not just leave the "the" off?

Good find on the relative, Walter.

Thanks everyone.

@Frank Apisa,
It's been a while since I just put nyt photos here, but I clip photos from many other places, always (we used to show photography) attempting to give credit.

The SF Chronicle, a place I rather like, makes the photographers fat typed, not in print but in copying, and I always convert those to tiny.
This is odd as I am pro photographers, except that I doubt they want their notation be in balloon words.

I'll admit to being stern - attribution of photos.
