Which sentence sounds native? 1 or 2?

Both sound native. The first one sounds more casual then the second sentence. So, it depends on who is doing the speaking. If it's a professor or academic then I'd say the second sentence would be appropriate for the topic. Otherwise, the first sentence would be the most likely one you'd hear be spoken.
