I hear ya about the compensating part. If push comes to shove (IRL), I'll stand up for myself. It's just not a personality trait that I relish. I prefer something quieter.

If approached the right way and someone speaks to me first, I'm pleasant enough. It's just that I rarely initiate contact. Friendship in person is not something I crave. I dunno, but for some reason it's different for me here. Acceptance seems to be important to me on this forum. I seem to relate better. I look at it as "friendship at my convenience".
It's strange, but while doing my meter reading rounds, I'm fairly gregarious. I try to get along with the customers. Maybe it's if I accidently step on their flowers, they won't be mad at me.
