I think Brazil missed Thiago Silva and Neymar.

...And Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Pelé, Rivelino, Garrincha, Tostao, Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Djalma Santos, Alemao, Bebeto...

On twitter at the moment is the speculation that the result was inevitable given the logo the Brazillians chose for the WC:

@fbaezer,
How many goals do Robben or Sneijder need tomorrow before I reach the top of the leader board?

@Ticomaya,
You need Sneijder - Robben is also George and Timur's top pick. Me, I need Higuain to go apeshit - in the semi and the final.

@hingehead,
Yeah, I know. I meant Robben AND Sneijder. I need Robben to score (how many?) and get me toward the top, and then Sneijder to score (how many?) to put me at the top.

I think the numbers are probably pretty big, and my chances ... not so good.

Will Ratzinger play for Germany in the Final or is he retired like Beckenbauer?

Team news....De Jong is back in the Holland team after a speedy recovery from groin injury.
He will sit on Messi, and stick to him like s**t to a blanket.

I also think that Robben will have his wings clipped tonight, either by two or three onto him as soon as he gets possession, or an Argie hitman will take him out early on.
RVP will hopefully be in productive mood tonight, so even if Robben is crocked, there will be another hungry goalscorer on the pitch.

I still reckon 3 - 2 to Holland, possibly 4 - 2.

Well, hey.

There I was, home in time to read play by play, lolling about, when not in the kitchen, with a sort of nothing match (better explained by others) when the phone rang and the screen thingy say an old friend's name. No way I wouldn't answer, despite that my hands had just been dealing with fresh chicken. I had to ask her to hang on so I could wash my hands and deracinize the phone salmonella (I've never been sick from chicken), but know salmonella as not a myth.

That call was just before the added half hour, and I got back just after the penalty kicks. Major call, dear friend. Her forty two year old daughter is about to birth a baby girl. This is impossible, since I am 44 and she is 45...

Anyway, sludgy match in my outside-of-it view. I read up, after it.

I figure Germany will completely cream Argentina.

@fbaezer,
That doesn't look like Ratzinger to me.
Maybe I am missing a joke.

@ossobuco,
I bet real soccer fans loved that game. Personally, I peaked in on the action from time-to-time and allowed the sounds of the crowd to cause me to look up at the screen. I think the stats for shots on goal the first 90 mins were an accumulative total for both teams was 3. Then they added another 30 mins and the scoreless tied continued.

What was that you said? Three shots on goal for BOTH teams in the first 90 mins?!

Then there's that old soccer bugaboo for me...after both teams worked the arses off to a scoreless tie...in the semi-final round of the WC, you decide the game by penalty kicks? That's just un-American!

@Ragman,
No, not really. Football fans around the world probably felt a bit of an anti climax after the Brazil trouncing of the previous day.

Both the Dutch and Argentine managers put into place a smothering of the two star players, namely Robben and Messi, so as soon as the ball went anywhere near them, two or three defenders would hassle them off the ball.
Both teams held back, especially as the game went on, as they didn't want to get caught on the break with their knickers round their ankles.

On balance, Argentina just about deserved to go through, imo.

Should be a good Final.

It was one most the most boring matches I've seen - especially for a semi-final - besides a certain kind of thrill during the penalty shooting.

And I have my doubts about a "good" final.
