@cicerone imposter,
From my now rather dense reading (well, many many articles read by a person who doesn't really have, right now, any way to see the matches, thus has blank spots in tactics understanding), I do take it that Germany was technically at the top, even though not actually motorized perfection in action at all times... though there were other sharp teams. But I can love teams for lots of reasons that are unreasonable. The good news is I finally found some online football tutorials that don't require watching videos I can't access. These tutorials come with diagrams and helpful explanations.
Now I just need a dictionary to understand the everyday colloquial jargon of the British writers of the articles I read... sometimes we have a whole different language.
At one point I read a soccer day's worth of Wall Street Journal world cup play by play, but there was better information in the Guardian's articles - more observations, fast fast fast, more photos, and sometimes videos that did work for me.
Apparently their videos, even if youtube, aren't adobe flash dependent. Plus some neat music from time to time..
Maybe in the next four years I'll pay attention to Club football, but I'm not up for fantasy association football just yet.
Besides, it's almost time to start reading about what's happening in american football.
