A Question to the US Electorate .......

Reply Thu 29 Apr, 2004 05:12 am
My intent is not to ridicule but to understand what the Hell is going on in the political climate of the US. 'cause right now I ain't got a clue of what goes on in the minds of people who elect the likes of George Bush.

Well here goes .......

Here in the UK I and the majority of voters elected the labour party into power thinking we were voting for a party that although wern't in any way great, we thought were better than the conservatives. However when they got in we found a different story. Blair turned out to be more right wing than the bloody conservatives. All the true Labour party voters were furious at being cheated. When Blair followed Bush in his global mission to destroy the planet we took to the steets and two million people marched through London. Blair still didn't listen. We are not living in a democracy.

Now on to the US. You are living in a country with a 'leader' in power who didn't even win the election. However what suprises me more is how many of you did actually vote for Bush. All the information on this guy was available to anyone who wanted to know the truth about this guys past and his corporate and war criminal friends. Did you all read it and think "ah well, we'll give him a chance to prove himself. Maybe he's changed"? I mean what the hell goes on out there? You even voted in Reagan. A bloody failed Hollywood 'actor' whose policies where nearly as bad as Bushy boy's. Look at the California re-call. You voted in a nazi rapist idiot. Is this just because he appeared in stupid mindless shoot 'em up action films? Did you listen to his politics? You are living in a country with a two party system worse than ours. What gets people in is how much bloody money they've got. How good they appear in front of a camera instead of what they have to say politically. What corporations are willing to back them and how high they can wave a bloody flag to convince you that they are bloody patriotic.

You have no free health care system. Poverty is everywhere you look. The levels of illiteracy is higher than many third world countries. Crime is at an unbelievable level. You have a gun culture that puts your name to shame. The level of obesity has reached the point where it's a bigger health problem than smoking. A poor man living in a flat in Florida pays as much tax as a bloody CEO. I mean come on.

There are issues that need addressing here. When are the majority of Americans gonna start saying "we wan't someone that stands up for our interests" rather than someone who looks good on the telly, giving tax cuts to the corporations and starting wars for profit and sending Americans out to their deaths.

I know there are a growing number of Americans that know what's going on, which is very promising but there still seems to be loads who are still waving flags instead of asking questions. Things are bad here in the UK. The US and the UK are definately not democracies but here I can't imagine anyone voting for a bloody actor or anyone as thick as Bush.

Well just curious, fire away ........

Around 47% of the US population is ignorant &/or stupid &/or they don't give a shite. That's the short answer.

1) Bush won the election. In America we have the electoral college and Bush won this. The Supreme Court voted to uphold the original vote of the election. Bush won the state of Florida by 500 votes. This outcome can be argued ad infinitum.
2) Bush has corporate "friends"- All politicians have them and they fund campaigns. War ciminals- name them and how they are war criminals. 3) Yes we voted for Reagan and it was this very same actor who expediated the demise of the Iron Curtain. I see by your Palestinian flag icon that you would not like a Pro-Israel President like Reagan but some in Eastern Europe would beg to differ on the Reagan Presidency. 4) Governor Terminator is not a Rapist or a Nazi. He has a history of generous gifts to Jewish charities. Idiotic quotes when he was 16 are just that. Rapist- no. But he does have some Benny Hill qualities in his past that are not good. The two party system has served our country pretty well. We are after all the most prosperous nation in the world. A free health care system is a debacle. The free market sytem is why America has the best Doctors coming from all over he World. Changes are always needed though. The rest of your paragraph is laughable. Have you ever been to America? Literacy in America is 97% in the UK 99%. Third World Level. I think not. As to poverty and Crime- I have been to London and Paris and find no difference than here in New York. This is not the Calcutta you portray. The rich pay the majority of the taxes, however, there are corporate loopholes that should be closed. You harp on the flag waving aspect of America. Well I like a sense of nationalism. My grandfather was on Iwo Jima and was there when that flag was raised. I like the idea of an independent foreign policy and would not like to kowtow to the European "superstate" I think that patriotism is a good thing and you should respect the great history of your nation and acknowledge and change the faults. Elections have been deluded into a beauty/charisma contest. This is the media's fault in that they cover elections like a horse race. They are more interested in the race itself than the policies. I am a conservatve and voted for Bush because I believe in lower taxes, less government and a strong foreign policy. I am not ignorant/stupid and I do give a shite.
I will argue my positions on their merits and not partisan rhetoric.

I also cannot believe how the UK continues to have their taxpayer dollars go to a corrupt and decadent monarchy. Nations in glass houses should not thrown stones. Who voted for QEII or Prince Charlie anyway.

In fact, since the Monarchy gave to the British Government lands and income worth billions of dollars, the U.K. taxpayers got a fabulous deal in exchange for the small amount they return to maintain the Royal family.

However, you are correct in that the U.K.'s taxpayers dollars are going to two corrupt and decadent organisations. One is called the European Union. The other is the Bush Administration.

Full disclosure requires me to state that I am an Irish-American
(one of the many hyphenated Americans). I could not help taking a potshot at the crown. Being an Irishman and all that history entails makes me very sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. The best thing for the Palestinian people would be to get rid of the corrupt Arafat. The Palestinians deserve their own state but not at the expense of driving Israel into the sea. Israel should withdraw from the territories and dismantle the settlements. My two cents or pence if you will.

Well you gotta love the Brits Smile
What flag are you flying there Dottie?

While I love the UK and its people for the most part and most Brits seems to think the U.S.A. is okay, if somewhat backward and retarded, but we have managed to be the most productive, most prosperous nation in the world despite our backward ways. It is mystifying then why some think we should emulate them. Even more mystifying is why some Americans think we should emulate them.

I rather like the idea of the Queen and her court, however. Of such are the dreams of the young. I wonder if the idea could catch on here?

We have many things we could do better and sometimes we take two steps back for every step forward, but I am the eternal optimist and believe the Creator allows no poison for which there is no anecdote.

Irish-American.

Have you heard of the St. Patrick's Battalion? They are the real heros of American history.

And as for Israel. I want to see that racist aparteid state dismantled. Just like someone I know called Gilad Atzmon from Israel http://www.gilad.co.uk/ . But I still defend the rights of Jews to live in PALESTINE!! Victory to the Intifada!

Viva Zapata!!! Yeah, I know those guys. Some movie was made about them with the guy from Platoon- Tom Berenger. One Man's Hero. Hero to the Mexicans maybe but not the US. The Irish have made significant conributions to all US conflicts.
The guys in the San Patricios should have been fighting the Brits in Ireland instead they were forced by economics to fight fellow poor Catholics in Mexico. Good random reference though. I would love to hear Gilad's tracks with that mad, drunken genius Shane McGowan. I would not call Israel a racist apartheid state. For all of its faults it is still far more democratic than any of its neighbors who wish to destroy it. There is a free press in Israel and they have the right to disagree with their government. I do not find such an example anywhere in the Arab world.

Although i have no reason to slander the San Patricios, i think that your comment that they are the real heroes of American history is over the top. But then, the rest of your post is over the top.

No further comment is needed . . .

Off topic but great name, Setanta. Good to have the hound of Ulster on the board. I, on the other hand, have a moniker that
memorilizes a Tudor victory over Richard III. But hey it is easy for me to remember.

¡Hola Compañero!

Hey, you say about Israel's press. Remember this? http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=8247

Quote:
Special situation of the United States and Israel The ranking distinguishes behaviour at home and abroad in the cases of the United States and Israel. They are ranked in 31st and 44th positions respectively as regards respect for freedom of expression on their own territory, but they fall to the 135th and 146th positions as regards behaviour beyond their borders.

The Israeli army's repeated abuses against journalists in the occupied territories and the US army's responsibility in the death of several reporters during the war in Iraq constitute unacceptable behaviour by two nations that never stop stressing their commitment to freedom of expression.

The figures for 2004 should be out soon. That'll be interesting!

It is very easy to have a low ranking for journalistic freedom in a war zone. If it weren't for the US Army et al the journalists would have a huge amount of freedom. A freedom to be kidnapped. Many of the supposed abuses of the army are done for their own good. However, I am not as naive to believe that the US military does not try to downplay embarrassing mistakes. Still highest ranking for an Arab nation, 102nd.

Excuse me? Robert Fisk doesn't need the murderous US army he's there. He ain't been kidnapped. And he's reporting the truth! Not some 'imbedded' propaganda spewing puppet.

Look at what the US has done to journalists in Iraq. They put a tank shell through the Palestine Hotel. They bombed Al Jazeera. ( http://electroniciraq.net/news/1141.shtml ) They banned a newspaper. They tortured a photographer ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1200854,00.html )

Al Jazeera is also reporting the war with blinders on. When the senior cleric in Iraq attacked Al Jazeera for their imbalanced coverage it was not reported. The US tank fired a shell at the hotel because the camera looked like an enemy implacement. Abuses of prisoners has gone on in Iraq and it should be dealt with accordingly.
