Feds Won't Allow Mad Cow Testing

The Department of Agriculture on Friday refused to allow a Kansas beef producer to test all its cattle for mad cow disease, saying such sweeping tests were "not scientifically warranted."

Consumer groups were sarcastic about the department's decision.

"It is ironic in the extreme that an administration that's so interested in letting industry come up with its own solutions would come down with a heavy government hand on a company that's being creative," said Dr. Peter Lurie, deputy director of the health research group at Public Citizen, a frequent critic of the food industry.

2 sides to this story:

1> The beef dealer will be able to say 100% of their beef is mad cow free. This will increase their sales and re-start their export business which has taken a big hit since the last "outbreak".

2> Because of the fact that one beef producer has started testing EVERY cow for mad cow disease they too will have to start testing which will increase production costs and may lead to the closing of some beef production facilities who are already working on a tight budget.

I had a thread about this in Food and Drink. Personally, so what. Farm closings are nothing new, and so the price of meat goes up, but at least the consumer knows it is safe. I think the US department of agriculture is ass-basckwards on this.
